Lawrence North vs. Cathedral Notes
-Lawrence North struggled all season, but they won 4 straight games heading into sectional play including wins over Bowman Academy and Pike.
-Cathedral entered the game on a 12 game winning streak and 19-3 on the season.
-Lawrence North started off the game very well. They held Cathedral to just 6 points over the first 6 minutes.
-Purdue recruit Basil Smotherman was much more active than he has been in 90% of the games that I’ve seen him play over the last 3 years. He didn’t dominate, but he was looking to score/attack when he got the ball.
-Jared Drew got Cathedral on track in the second quarter. He scored 8 points in the quarter.
-Mo Evans was also very good for Cathedral although he had a couple of turnovers.
-Lawrence North stayed strong though behind Eron Harris and Basil Smotherman. Harris (West Virginia signee) scored 10 points in the first half.
-Lawrence North struggled to score in the 3rd quarter. Cathedral disrupted everything that Lawrence North was wanting to do and forcing turnovers.
-The game was back and forth down the stretch, but Lawrence North could never get over the hump.
-Cathedral won 64-58
-Cathedral advanced to play Roncalli in the second round of sectionals.
-Lawrence North finished the season 8-12

Player Evaluations for Lawrence North
Eron Harris 6’4” SG 2012 Harris has all the skills necessary to succeed at West Virginia. He is going to need to add muscle, but I don’t think that will be a problem. Good quickness, good outside shooter, and handles the ball well.
Basil Smotherman 6’5” SF 2013The Purdue commit has been very underwhelming for most of his high school career. He played well the spring after his freshman year, but I haven’t seen many things to be excited about in his game since. I’ve seen him twice in the last 10 days and both games he was more assertive. If he stays that way, then he has a chance to play at Purdue.
Petey Balls 6’1” PG 2012 The Northern Illinois commit comes off the bench for Lawrence North. He has a problem with over-dribbling that leads to many unnecessary turnovers. He has a chance to do well at NIU, but only if he becomes more efficient with the ball and takes the directions of his coaching staff.
Dan Scofield 6’7” C 2013 I was semi-high on Scofield after I saw him play last spring/summer. He seemed like a good back to the basket power post player. After watching him twice lately, I have dropped his stock. He is a powerful 6’7” but has extremely limited athleticism and isn’t smooth in the post. He miss handles the ball in traffic too often. Right now, I put him in the D2/NAIA range more than the low-major range.
John McCloud 6’7” SF 2013 McCloud is a player that has received some D1 interest and a reported offer from James Madison. I don’t see his upside or current skill set. He is an okay athlete and is a streaky outside shooter. If he is going to be a 3 at the college level, he will need to drastically improve his perimeter skills.
Sam Logwood 6’5” SF 2014 One of my favorite players in the 2014 class in terms of upside. He is still raw and didn’t get as many minutes this year for LN as I would have liked. He is a great athlete, tough competitor, and has a good skill set. He is still learning how to play against top level competition though. He could be a mid-major plus guy in the next year.
Daeshon Francis 6’3”SG 2014 Francis is another player like Logwood that has a really nice upside. I’ve haven’t seen a ton of him, but good frame, good athlete, gets after it defensively. I haven’t seen enough of him to know how his skill set offensively is yet. He will be one of the 2014’s to follow this spring/summer.
Sean Howard 5’10” PG 2013 Howard is one of my favorite players in the state. He is a leader, competitor, and smart with the ball. He is undersized but rarely gets out played by the top point guards. Howard would be a steal for D2/NAIA programs. {/iACL}
