Guerin Catholic vs. Evansville Bosse
-Guerin Catholic’s blow out win over Evansville Bosse was shocking. Bosse jumped out to an early lead and then couldn’t score consistently against Guerin’s zone defense.
-The zone was especially effective against sophomore star Jaquan Lyle. Lyle scored a couple of easy baskets to start the game and then was a non-factor the rest of the way. He scored a couple of baskets in the fourth when the game was already decided.
-Aaron Brennan (2014) dominated the inside for Guerin. Bosse doesn’t have a post presence on their roster and Brennan is too skilled to be guarded by guards in the post. Brennan also stepped out and hit two 3-pointers.
-The biggest surprise performance in the game was Whit Rapp. Guerin’s sophomore point guard came into the game averaging just 3.5 points per game and poured in 14 in the semi-state game. Rapp also did a great job against the Bosse pressure.
-If Whit Rapp proved to be the most surprising, Jalen Pendleton was the most dominant. Pendleton had a game-high 29 point for Bosse. Pendleton looked like a grown man playing against middle school kids when he slashed to the basket and scored with ease.
Pike vs. Castle
-It looked like we might have another surprising outcome when Castle jumped out to an early lead on Pike.
-Castle’s 6-7 senior Shane Seniour had 3 baskets in the opening few minutes to push Castle ahead from the start.
-Castle would lead after the first quarter 14-11.
-Pike would start to assert themselves in the second quarter though. R.J. Hunter had another great game. He and Zavier Turner sparked the big Pike run in the quarter.
-Pike would blow the game wide open in the third quarter on their way to a 66-46 victory.
-Seniour ended up having a nice game for Castle and finished with 16 points.

Aaron Brennan 6’5” SF/PF Guerin Catholic (2014) Brennan had 20 points in the blow-out win. He was really solid in the game, but most of the things he did will not translate to the next level. Brennan showed some nice post moves over smaller defenders, nice touch and good footwork. He’s a legit 6’5” right now and I’m not sure he is going to grow much more. At the high-major level, that means he will have to be a perimeter player. While he does shoot the ball well from beyond the arc, the rest of his perimeter game is sub-par. He didn’t put the ball on the floor and drive to the basket in the whole game. His athleticism isn’t very good at this point as his feet aren’t quick on the perimeter and he doesn’t jump very well. That is why I believe he will only end up a high-major player if he grows to be 6-8 or 6-9 and can be a back to the basket player that can also step out to 20 feet and knock down shots.
Jalen Pendleton 6’2” SG Evansville Bosse (2012) Pendleton was an absolute beast against Guerin. He slashed to the basket and scored whenever he wanted to. He also showed his weaknesses though. He shot 8-15 from the line and on the season was only 59%. He also didn’t make any jump shots outside of the lane. He is the definition of a slasher. Pendleton finishes around the rim very well. He also competed hard throughout although his team was facing a large comeback.
Pendleton could do very well at the mid-major/low-major level. He will be able to guard multiple positions and get to the basket. He has interest from Murray State, Western Kentucky, Evansville, Middle Tennessee, TCU, and Ball State but no current offers.
Jaquan Lyle 6’4” SG Evansville Bosse (2014) Lyle was a complete non-factor against the Guerin zone. He was very passive with the ball. He rarely looked to attack the gaps of the defense. It was very strange that he didn’t have the ball in his hands more often. He is a great passer, but zipped a couple of passes off teammate’s hands for turnovers. Lyle is definitely one of the most talented players in the 2014 class; he just had an off game for some reason.
Perry Fairrow 5’11” PG Evansville Bosse (2014) Sophomore point guard for Bosse that I have heard a lot about going back to his middle school career, but I haven’t seen him play much yet. Much like Lyle, Fairrow had a very quiet game. He was hampered by fouls a little bit though. It seemed like he gave up on a lot of plays as well. Fairrow will be one player that I am anxious to see more of this spring.
Whit Rapp 5’10” PG Guerin Catholic (2014) One of the stars of the game for Guerin. As I mentioned before, he only averaged 3.5 ppg during the season but scored 14 in the semi-state game. He also was very steady with the ball. Bosse likes to pressure and turn you over to create offense and Rapp did a great job limiting his turnovers. He did a great job of scoring in the lane as well. He will likely end up being a D2/NAIA type-prospect.
Shane Seniour 6’7” PF Castle (2012) I don’t remember Seniour from when Castle played North Central in late December. I need to find my notes on the game, but I’m almost positive that he played and was just very quiet. He had a really nice game against Pike. He scored in the post and off a couple of mid-range jumpers. He could possibly be a face-up option for low-majors. I believe he might be looking into going to prep school next year.
Kevin Brown 6’5” PF Castle (2012) Brown is the clone of Pike’s Johntae Alexander. He is a good athlete, tough defender, great motor, undersized post player. I like him for the D2/NAIA level or junior college.
Taishaun Johnson 6’1” PG Pike (2013) Johnson does some great things, but also over-dribbles and forces a lot of bad shots. He is extremely quick though which allows him to get away with being out of control at times. If he could play within himself, he has a chance to be a D1 player. He has a long ways to go though.
Blake Simmons 6’4” SF Castle (2013) Simmons is your classic “coach’s son” type of player. His father is the head coach of Evansville, Marty Simmons. Not a great athlete, but will get to the basket against quicker defenders. He moves extremely well without the ball and shoots it well from the outside. His only current offer is from Evansville.{/iACL}
