Roncalli @ Perry Meridian

To begin both teams’ seasons, Roncalli made the short trip to Perry Meridian on Saturday night to renew the rivalry between both schools. Roncalli, led by Youngstown State signee Ryan Weber and Lewis University (DII) recruit David Heckman, begin their first season as a 4A school in sectional 10 and Perry Meridian was playing their first game without Max Landis who is now at Gardner-Webb.

The beginning was dominated by Perry as they jumped out to an early 10-0 lead with hot shooting, but the size of 6-7 Weber and Heckman was too much for Perry’s zone. Several times, they were able to connect with high-lows in the zone, giving Heckman easy lay-ups underneath the basket. Heckman had 10 of Roncalli’s 12 first quarter points.

From there, Roncalli’s defensive pressure was too much. Trailing 13-12 after the first quarter, Perry didn’t score again until three minutes into the second half. With the halftime score being 21-13 at the half, Roncalli went on a 21-3 run after Perry opened with a 10 point lead.

The Rebels did finally pull away to a 12 point victory as the Falcons’ offense struggled to find scoring. Freshman Kaleb Ferrell, young brother of IU signee Yogi Ferrell, led the team in scoring with 13 as he knocked down several free-throws towards the end of the game.

David Heckman led all scorers with 21 points and added on six rebounds. Ryan Weber struggled offensively, shooting just 1-7 from the field and finishing with just four points. However, he did add a couple of steals, blocks and assists using his length against an undersized Perry team.

Park Tudor @ Roncalli

Playing in front of a sold out crowd in Roncalli’s gym, the atmosphere was there from the start. Mid-way through the JV game, doors were closed and no one else was allowed to enter the school. This game had a post-season feel from the beginning.

With that support from a home crowd, Roncalli came out firing. Youngstown State signee Ryan Weber opened with 7 first quarter points as Trevon Bluiett and Yogi Ferrell both picked up two fouls. Those fouls, however, did not stop Ferrell from also posting nine first quarter points as well. Park Tudor had a 13-12 lead after one.

In the second quarter, the Rebels started to pull away, and expanded their lead to 10 at 25-15 before Park Tudor narrowed it to four before halftime.

First look at this season’s North Central Panthers. I didn’t expect this game to be very competitive and that prediction proved correct. Gary Wallace trailed 18-14 before North Central took complete control of the game. North Central cruised to a 101-49 victory.

North Central-Ronnie Johnson 17pts, John Murry 15pts, Patrick Ingram 11pts, Perry Poindexter 12pts 9rebs, Darius Latham 12pts, Jimmy Miller 7pts, Chandler Rowe 5pts, JaRon Sherard 6pts

Carmel traveled to Indianapolis Tech Saturday night to take on the talented sophomores that Tech has. Both teams suffered their first defeat on Friday night; Tech lost to Lawrence Central and Carmel fell to Noblesville.

Early, it was the Trey Lyles show. He had a step-back 3-pointer and a big-time spin move from the block that he finished with a powerful two-handed dunk. Lyles scored 10 of Tech’s 12 first quarter points.

Tech must have decided to ignore the scouting report in the second quarter as they left Carmel’s Sam Curts open from the outside time and time again. Curts hit four 3’s in the second quarter and six in the first half. He had 18 of Carmel’s 30 first half points.

Merrillville traveled to Chesterton on Saturday night for both teams first DAC contest of the year.  Merrillville got out to a quick lead but the young Chesterton team fought back to take a 22-21 half time advantage.  It was all Merrillville in the 3rd quarter though, outscoring the Trojans 24-12.  The Trojans cut the deficit in the 4th quarter but Merrillville was able to hold on for a 54-47 victory.

Senior Edward Seay and junior B.J. Jenkins led Merrillville with 12 points apiece.  Seay was 6 of 8 from the field and pulled down 6 rebounds.  Most of his points came on mid-range jumpers.  He had a couple of nice tip-ins as well off of missed shots. None of Seay’s points were off of back to the basket post moves.

B.J. Jenkins, 5’10” guard, was 2 for 5 beyond the arc. Jenkins was coming off of an impressive 8 for 10 (3-point shooting), 31 point performance the night before against Highland.

Matt Holba, 6’6” freshman, played 26 minutes scored 9 points and pulled down 7 rebounds for Chesterton in only his second varsity game.  All of his points came in the paint.  He looked strong on his moves to the basket.  Senior Kemonte Price led Chesterton with 15 points though while sophomore Cole Teal added 10 points.
