Castle @ North Central

INDIANAPOLIS—Castle (just east of Evansville) entered the game with a 5-1 record. Their only defeat was a two-point loss to Evansville Harrison. North Central suffered their second loss of the season to Park Tudor right before Christmas.

Early on it looked like North Central was going to dominate. They were getting easy looks and taking Castle out of their offense. North Central got sloppy with the ball though. They had five straight possessions where they turned the ball over.

Chase Jewell (2013) was the Castle offense in the second quarter. Jewell went 3/3 from the outside in the first half on his way to 12 points. Castle only trailed by 1at the half behind Jewell’s shooting.

That was as close as Castle would get to leading though. North Central opened the second half with a 12-0 run. The Panthers held Castle to just 1 field goal in the 3^rd quarter.

Right when it looked like North Central was going to really blow the game open Castle’s Blake Simmons would get them back into the game. Simmons struggled in the first half, but he got going in the fourth. It was a 4-point game with four minutes left in the game, but North Central held on for the 65-53 victory.

Chatard @ Arlington

INDIANAPOLIS- This was our first look at both teams this season. Chatard had many players in the fall league though. Chatard has a 1-2 punch of Greg Gardner (2012) and Joe Fagan (2013). Gardner is headed to D2 Alabama-Huntsville while Fagan has an offer from Duquesne and is receiving D1 interest from Bucknell, Cornell, American, Bowling Green, Brown, Wright State, IPFW, IUPUI, Western Michigan and Gardner-Webb.

The first half was painful to watch. Both teams had a bunch of turnovers plus poor shooting. Then when you throw in a ton of soft whistles the game was going at a snail’s pace. That might be disrespectful to a snail though.

Gardner had a decent first half because he does so many things well. He had 7 points and 8 rebounds through 16 minutes of play. Fagan struggled in the first quarter, but got things going in the second. He scored 10 of Chatard’s 12 points in the second.

The pace picked up significantly right away in the third quarter. Chatard increased their energy and Arlington started to play better as well. Fagan scored another 10 points in the quarter. He attacked the rim off a shot fake two times in a row; both resulted in Arlington fouls as Fagan tried to finish above the rim.

Arlington’s Demetrius Anderson played much better in the second half after struggling in the first. Anderson got to the line 15 times in the game. Unfortunately for Arlington, he only hit 8 of them.

Gardner iced the game for Chatard from the line down the stretch. He was 8 of 8 in the second half from the line as Chatard walked away with a 60-44 win.

Roncalli @ Warren Central

INDIANAPOLIS- Roncalli entered the match-up with Warren Central with a 9-0 record. Although Roncalli hasn’t played the toughest schedule so far, they do have impressive wins over Park Tudor and Brebeuf. Warren Central is having a very solid year so far as well. They recently won the Marion tournament; where they beat Munster and Bowman Academy.

The first half was a struggle offensively for both teams. There were almost as many turnovers (22) as there were points (25). Roncalli held Warren Central to just two points in the second quarter. Despite the lack of offense for Warren, Roncalli held just a 3 point halftime advantage.

The second half was more like what most people would have expected from the start. Both teams were still playing hard, tough defense but the offenses started to handle it a little bit better. Bradley Fey and David Heckman played extremely well for Roncalli in the third. Fey is a pass first point guard that kept finding Heckman. Devin Davis was strong for Warren Central. The Indiana University-bound junior started to rebound and attack the basket offensively more aggressively in the third quarter.

The pace slowed considerably in the fourth quarter. Fey came up with a couple of big baskets for Roncalli down the stretch. It was Fey’s feed to Heckman with 14 seconds left that led to the game-tying field goal. Devon Hawkins had a good look for the game winner, but it missed and time expired during the rebound.

One unlikely scoring source for Warren Central was senior Charlie Dant. Dant scored 12 points in the second half and overtime. Devin Davis was also big for Warren Central in the overtime. He scored 5 points in the extra time. Ryan Weber and Fey fouled out during the overtime for Roncalli which put them in a tough spot.

Warren Central walked away with 55-49 victory. Davis led WC with 20 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 steals although he also had 7 turnovers. David Heckman finished with 21 points to lead Roncalli.

Columbus North @ Lawrence Central

INDIANAPOLIS- Entering Friday night’s game against Columbus North, Lawrence Central’s Jeremy Hollowell was only 25 points shy of joining the 1,000 career point club. With this in mind, he was focused right from the tip. Hollowell played one of the best games I’ve ever seen him play and I’ve seen him in at least 50 games over the last four years. Early in the third quarter, he hit a three that put him over the 1,000 point mark.

Despite Hollowell’s great game, Columbus North stayed close with Lawrence Central. Columbus North has a star in the making with freshman Josh Speidel. Speidel only finished with six points, but he was guarded by Hollowell most of the game and he still showed flashes of his potential.

Lawrence Central led 39-36 at halftime before Hollowell took over the third quarter. Hollowell scored 13 points in the period including a couple of highlight reel alley-opps. Columbus North had no answer for him and the game slipped away from them during the third.

Lawrence Central walked away with a 74-60 victory as Columbus North chipped into the lead late in the fourth quarter. Hollowell finished with a game-high 36 points and 10 rebounds.

Indianapolis Tech vs. Lawrence Central Notes

-Tech jumped out to an early lead. Trey Lyles was outstanding on both ends. He had a huge block on Jeremy Hollowell at the rim and he also had a spin move out of the post that he finished with a dunk.

-Lawrence Central got back into the game because of their zone defense. Tech started settling for outside shots consistently while also turning the ball over frequently.

-It looked like Lawrence Central might pull away in the fourth quarter as they took a 47-38 lead to the fourth.

-Tech didn’t go away though. Hollowell picked up his 4^th foul with 3:41 left in the game and it was a back and forth game the rest of the way.

-Lawrence Central was up 2 when Tyler Corley turned it over and Tech got a lay-up to tie the game with 22 seconds.

-Tyler Fischl took a shot that got blocked with around 8 seconds left. Trey Lyles jumped on the loose ball and was tied up. The possession arrow favored Lawrence Central.

-Lawrence Central in-bounded the ball to Jeremy Hollowell with 5.3 seconds left. He sliced to the basket and scored over contact from Lyles as time expired.

-Lawrence Central advanced to play Warren Central in the second round of the sectional.

-Indianapolis Tech finished the season 16-5 with their main core of players all underclassmen.
