BLOOMINGTON- The adidas May Classic took place May 13th through May 15th. It is a great event annually and this year was no different. Some of the top programs that attended the event were Indiana Elite, Eric Gordon All-Stars, Meanstreets, Wisconsin Playground Warriors, Michigan Mustangs, and Derrick Rose.
Here is a look at some of the 2014 players that were at the adidas May Class.

Tyler Wideman 6’8 C Lake Central
The big fella isn’t completely healthy yet. His ankle or foot has been bothering him for the last month or so. You don’t see too many 6’7 240 freshmen that are actually in good shape. I wouldn’t say that Wideman is in great shape but he certainly isn’t too out of shape. His back to the basket game still needs development, but he has good feet and good hands plus a pretty good touch. It seems like he is done growing, but if he could get another inch or two it would help him a lot since he is not the best athlete. He plays below the rim right now with the occasional dunk. I have him on the HM/MM+ fence right now although Purdue just offered him.
Tyler Arens 6’7 PF Marion
First good look at Arens this weekend against some good competition. I walked away less than impressed. He should be a very good high school player. His athleticism is very minimal to put it nicely. Arens also isn’t very skilled right now. His touch around the basket is non-existent. I’m not going to write him off completely, but he has a long ways to go before he is considered by mid-major programs or higher.
The good news for Arens is that his father is still a couple of inches taller than he is. So, if he gets to 6’10 or 6’11 the lack of athleticism goes out of the window. He has a good chance of getting to that height, but I wouldn’t say it is a given. I think he should be on the radar of most D1’s just because of that height potential.
Grant Evans 6’2 CG Wapahani
First look at Evans this spring as well. I walked away very impressed with his shooting. In both games I watched, he missed a handful of shots in a row. He didn’t get frustrated and then later in the game he found the stroke and rattled off 4 or 5 in a row in each.
Now, what else can he do other than shoot? That is yet to be determined. He is an above average athlete but not great laterally or super quick. Handles are okay but will need to improve to be considered a true point guard. He had some problems passing in traffic as well.
MM+/MM fence right now until he develops into more of a PG or grows. I think he has a chance for a couple more inches…baby faced and father is still taller than him.
Ernie Duncan 6’1 PG Evansville Harrison
I didn’t get to see Duncan against any good competition this weekend. So, I still don’t have a great read on how quick he is laterally especially or how he handles being pressured by a good defender. What we do know is that Duncan can absolutely shoot the ball and he can pass the ball especially in the open floor. Everyone complains that he is 2 years older than he is supposed to be for his grade. As long as you know that, you can adjust how much potential he has. Based off of his current skill level, he should end up as a D1 player. High-major D1? I’m not sure yet, but I’m not ruling it out yet.
Michael Jones 6’4 SG Northwest
Jones had a very good freshman year for Northwest. His athleticism and length makes him an attractive prospect. His shooting form is a little unorthodox because of his footwork but his release is good. His motor isn’t very good right now. He needs a bit more toughness to his game as he doesn’t finish through contact at all right now. I still have him as a MM+ player because of his potential to be pretty darn good.
Justin King 6’5 SF Bowman Academy
King is a lot like Trevon Bluiett in the sense that both are more PF’s now but will be SF’s down the road. Right now, King isn’t as productive as Bluiett. King is a bit longer and much more athletic. He runs the floor really well and is a good leaper. King needs to work on his skill set though. His shot looks pretty good, but it lacks consistency. King plays with an okay motor. It isn’t a big-time motor but he isn’t lacking in the area either. He probably needs to be on the radar of HM’s but not a high priority at this point. I project him in the MM+/MM level.
