BLOOMINGTON- The adidas May Classic took place May 13th through May 15th. It is a great event annually and this year was no different. Some of the top programs that attended the event were Indiana Elite, Eric Gordon All-Stars, Meanstreets, Wisconsin Playground Warriors, Michigan Mustangs, and Derrick Rose.
Here is a look at some of the players in the 2013 class.

Last year, he was just a slasher that scored at the rim. He is becoming a better passer with a tighter handle. Jackson’s outside shooting is still his weakest ability but it is improving rapidly.
He is right below Bryson Scott as far as 2013 point guards go. If his outside shooting becomes a weapon then he could overtake Scott. The thing I really like about Jackson is that he plays with a high motor and toughness just like Scott. Those have been the only two tough players in the 2013 class thus far.
Jackson is a MM+ prospect on the verge of HM status.
As a group, the prominent wing prospects of Indiana’s 2013 class have been frustrating thus far in their careers. Collin Hartman, Basil Smotherman, V.J. Beachem, Devin Davis, Jr., and Zak Irvin are who I am mainly talking about, but you can mention most of the 2013 class and this applies to them. They have been soft and almost uncompetitive as a class. It seems like none of them have a killer instinct to either take over a game offensively or to get into someone in order to get a stop defensively. I think in order to be an elite player; you have to have an edge to you. I’m talking about an edge in a competitive way, not in a dirty way. Devin Davis is probably plays with the biggest edge to him, but it’s not extremely fiery by any stretch.
These are guys who are committed to high-major programs or have offers from high-majors. It is frustrating to see players not reach their great potential. Right now, I don’t think any of the players listed above are playing to their potential. It seems like they are complacent with what they have achieved already. That is a bad sign for the colleges they are going to attend unless they change soon.
V.J. Beachem 6’7 SF New Haven
I’ve stated my dislikes about Beachem in the past, but he has been playing better this spring. It seems like he is getting stronger. Beachem used to be pure bone…now he has a tiny bit of muscle. His attitude seems much improved as well. I haven’t seen any pouting or complaining on the court. He could very easily end up as the best wing in the 2013 class if he keeps this improvement going. He is right on the borderline of MM+/HM now but I think he will be a HM player.
Devin Davis, Jr. 6’6 SF Warren Central
Davis was very good this weekend. His perimeter skill set isn’t to where it needs to be, but it is improving. I would still like to see the Indiana commit play more inside in order to be an inside/outside threat. He does play with a pretty good motor but there is room for improvement.
Darryl Baker 6’4 SG Jeffersonville
Baker is a good outside shooter, but I wouldn’t put him up with the best in the state. He is an okay athlete, but not a high-major wing type athlete. It’s hard to get a complete feel for how good he really is because he plays up so he doesn’t play against Hartman, Smotherman, Beachem, or Irvin. His ceiling isn’t as high as those guys that is for sure. MM prospect.
Cole Murray 6’6 SF Delphi
A shooter with size is what I have labeled him in the past. He will obviously need to be able to do more than just shoot to be a D1 player. This weekend he rebounded well and showed that he has the ability to defend above average athletes on the perimeter. His game will need to continue to improve especially in terms of putting the ball on the floor in order to get to the basket. If he adds that to his game, he will be a MM prospect.
Jaylon Brown 5’11 PG Fishers
Brown reminds me of Russell Westbrook a lot. I’m not saying that Brown will be an NBA player but their strengths and weaknesses are very similar. Brown is super athletic. At 5’11, they ran isolation for him this weekend and he beat his man off one step then finished the play with a dunk. There aren’t sophomore point guards that do that.
He’s more of a SG than a PG. Brown can handle it a little bit, but he is more of a scorer than a passer. Outside shooting is still very inconsistent as well. His athleticism would allow him to play at the high-major level if his skill set gets a lot better. He projects as a MM+/MM prospect right now.
Mo Evans 6’0 PG Cathedral
I didn’t see Evans this weekend, but I heard he had a great game against Demetrius Jackson and MBA Select 2013. Evans is vastly underrated. He gets to the rim with very good quickness and he can shoot it from the outside. I prefer Evans to his teammate and classmate David Hill who I will talk about next. Evans is a MM/MM- prospect.
David Hill 5’11 PG Cathedral
I have never been very high on Hill. He is not a great athlete and is very thin right now. He handles the ball well, but will make bad decisions with the ball including taking bad shots. He is an above average shooter but not a great shooter. Evansville offered him a few weeks ago and I’m not sure why. I think it is way too early to offer him. He might end up being able to play at that level but he has a ton of work to do. I project Hill ending up as a LM prospect but it is a big risk to offer him now.
Franko House 6’5 PF Elkhart Concord
House has always been one of my favorites in the 2013 class. He’s a wide-body but moves well and is extremely athletic for his build. I have seen him drive the lane and dunk but he isn’t fly over defenders to do it. He uses his body well and he finishes extremely well around the rim. He has a chance to be a D1 player…how high of a level can he play is the question. MM-/LM+ borderline right now for me.
