It looked like Brebeuf Jesuit had the game sealed in the second quarter when they stretched their lead to twenty points. P.J. Thompson was fantastic the entire game. He scored in every way imaginable. He hit jumpers off the dribble over defenders and scored at the basket. He scored 19 points in the first half while Brebeuf built their lead.
Providence St. Mel (IL) did not quit though. Their best player, Tevin King, would get injured in the third quarter with an apparent knee problem. He tried to come back in, but could not move well enough to stay on the floor. Providence St. Mel continued to cut into Brebeuf’s lead without King though. Brebeuf held a nine point lead heading to the fourth quarter.
St. Mel continued to pressure Brebeuf and Anthony Mosley would step-up in King’s place. Mosley consistently got to the hoop and finished. Down the stretch, St. Mel would lose another one of their top players, Khalil Small, to a cramping condition. Brebeuf did not handle the game pressure very well. They missed some critical free-throws that could have sealed the game. Mosley would send the game to overtime with his basket in the final 13 seconds.
In overtime, Adam Kroot was huge on the glass. The 6-3 guard battled on the boards and had a crucial “and 1” put back on a missed lay-up late in the overtime. Kroot would finish with 16 points and 10 rebounds. P.J. Thompson hit a bunch of free-throws to close out the game. Brebeuf walked away with a 79-74 victory. Thompson had a career high 40 points on 23 shots.
