The upset win for the Purple Aces is on the heels of a victory over Ball State on Saturday. At home on Saturday, Evansville built a 25-point lead before Ball State charged back and had a chance for the lead with under a minute to play. Despite the comeback, Evansville showed its firepower in the opener.
Against Kentucky, Sam Cunliffe came off the bench to score 14 points in the first half. Behind his scoring, Evansville built an eight-point lead in the first half. Since Kentucky is the #1 team in the nation, many were expecting a run by the Wildcats. UK did take the lead midway through the second half, but the Aces quickly regained the lead.
No Kentucky player had a great game. Immanuel Quickley had good moments when Kentucky needed points in the second half. Keion Brooks had a putback with four minutes remaining in the game to bring the Wildcats within four points. The Kentucky offense never found a rhythm. For the game, the Wildcats scored 0.91 points per possession. Evansville gave up 1.02 points per possession to Ball State.
Tyrese Maxey cut Evansville's lead to one point with eight seconds to play. The Aces had trouble getting the ball in after the layup, but Cunliffe finally took the pass and was fouled. He hit both free throws. A heave by Maxey was off the mark, and Evansville walked out of Rupp Arena with the 67-64 victory.
K.J. Riley, DeAndre Williams, and Shamar Givance had strong games in Evansville's historic win.
