Lawrence North vs. Cathedral Notes

-Lawrence North struggled all season, but they won 4 straight games heading into sectional play including wins over Bowman Academy and Pike.

-Cathedral entered the game on a 12 game winning streak and 19-3 on the season.

-Lawrence North started off the game very well. They held Cathedral to just 6 points over the first 6 minutes.

-Purdue recruit Basil Smotherman was much more active than he has been in 90% of the games that I’ve seen him play over the last 3 years. He didn’t dominate, but he was looking to score/attack when he got the ball.

-Jared Drew got Cathedral on track in the second quarter. He scored 8 points in the quarter.

-Mo Evans was also very good for Cathedral although he had a couple of turnovers.

-Lawrence North stayed strong though behind Eron Harris and Basil Smotherman. Harris (West Virginia signee) scored 10 points in the first half.

-Lawrence North struggled to score in the 3rd quarter. Cathedral disrupted everything that Lawrence North was wanting to do and forcing turnovers.

-The game was back and forth down the stretch, but Lawrence North could never get over the hump.

-Cathedral won 64-58

-Cathedral advanced to play Roncalli in the second round of sectionals.

-Lawrence North finished the season 8-12

Warren Central vs. Lawrence Central Notes

-Warren Central entered the game 14-6 on the season

-Lawrence Central beat Indianapolis Tech 61-59 in order to play Warren Central

-Both teams feature an Indiana University commit…Devin Davis (2013) for WC and Jeremy Hollowell (2012) for LC.

-The first half was back and forth from the tip. Neither team could create any type of separation from the other.

-Jeremy Hollowell had a very productive first half with 13 points while Devin Davis had just 6 points.

-Lawrence Central led 27-25 at the half.

-During halftime warm-ups, Hollowell went to the floor in pain and went to the locker for further observation.

-Warren Central opened up the second half on an 8-0 run and it looked like Lawrence Central was in trouble without their star.

-The Warren Central momentum was stopped when Devin Davis went to the bench with 4 fouls at the 3:41 mark of the 3rd quarter.

-The game was tied at 40 going into the fourth quarter with both stars on the bench. Davis for fouls and Hollowell with his injury.

-Tyler Corley knocked down a few big 3-pointers for LC in the fourth quarter. One of them made it 52-51 WC with 3 minutes left.

-Hollowell returned to action with 1:42 left and made a play to set-up DaVonte Harris for a 3, which he knocked down. 55-54 Warren Central.

Guerin Catholic vs. Evansville Bosse

-Guerin Catholic’s blow out win over Evansville Bosse was shocking. Bosse jumped out to an early lead and then couldn’t score consistently against Guerin’s zone defense.

-The zone was especially effective against sophomore star Jaquan Lyle. Lyle scored a couple of easy baskets to start the game and then was a non-factor the rest of the way. He scored a couple of baskets in the fourth when the game was already decided.

-Aaron Brennan (2014) dominated the inside for Guerin. Bosse doesn’t have a post presence on their roster and Brennan is too skilled to be guarded by guards in the post. Brennan also stepped out and hit two 3-pointers.

-The biggest surprise performance in the game was Whit Rapp. Guerin’s sophomore point guard came into the game averaging just 3.5 points per game and poured in 14 in the semi-state game. Rapp also did a great job against the Bosse pressure.

-If Whit Rapp proved to be the most surprising, Jalen Pendleton was the most dominant. Pendleton had a game-high 29 point for Bosse. Pendleton looked like a grown man playing against middle school kids when he slashed to the basket and scored with ease.

Pike vs. Castle

-It looked like we might have another surprising outcome when Castle jumped out to an early lead on Pike.

-Castle’s 6-7 senior Shane Seniour had 3 baskets in the opening few minutes to push Castle ahead from the start.

-Castle would lead after the first quarter 14-11.

-Pike would start to assert themselves in the second quarter though. R.J. Hunter had another great game. He and Zavier Turner sparked the big Pike run in the quarter.

-Pike would blow the game wide open in the third quarter on their way to a 66-46 victory.

-Seniour ended up having a nice game for Castle and finished with 16 points.

Cathedral vs. Roncalli Notes

-Roncalli entered the game 16-3 after receiving a bye in the first round.

-Cathedral beat Lawrence North to advance to the sectional semi-finals.

-Roncalli was the more aggressive team early and was really physical with Cathedral.

-The Roncalli bigs (Ryan Weber, David Heckman, Cole Toner) caused major problems for Cathedral early.

-Roncalli led 14-4 after 1 quarter.

-They would stretch the lead to 18-6 early in the second quarter.

-Jared Drew and Mo Evans rallied Cathedral though and it was 20-20 at the half.

-The third quarter was a grind and very low scoring just like the first half.

-Roncalli led 31-30 after 3 quarters.

-Action and pace really stepped up in the fourth.

-Things really picked up when Mo Evans hit a 3 when Cathedral was down 2 with 1:40 left.

-After a Roncalli foul, Jared Drew hit both free-throws to put Cathedral up 47-44.

-It looked like freshman Jalen Coleman sealed the game up when he hit 2 free-throws with 18.7 seconds left to put Cathedral up 51-46.

-Roncalli pushed the ball up the court and Bradley Fey knocked down a 3 with 9.9 seconds on the clock.

-Coleman was sent to the line again, but this time he only hit 1 of 2.

-Fey got another look for 3 and after rattling around the rim and backboard it dropped as time expired to send the game into overtime.

-Cathedral jumped out to a lead in overtime eventually taking a 3 point lead.

-Ryan Weber took over though. He got two buckets and then was sent to the line where he hit 1 of 2.

-Just when it looked like the game was over…Roncalli up 4 and the clock running down, Josh Sullen banked a shot from 25 feet. Cathedral called a timeout with 1.6 seconds left

-Cole Toner was fouled without any time coming off the clock. He hit both free-throws and Cathedral called another timeout. A timeout that they didn’t have and resulted in a technical foul.

-Roncalli 63-58 in overtime.

-Cathedral ended the season 20-4.

-Roncalli advanced to play Lawrence Central in the sectional final.
