Andrew Dakich is a 5-11 point guard from Zionsville High School. He led Zionsville to an 11-10 season this year while scoring 14 points per game. Dakich is a pass first point guard that only looks to score when his team needs him to score.
Dakich was recently offered a preferred walk-on spot with Purdue University. He has the same invitation from Brad Stevens and Butler. The Butler offer has been on the table for a longer period of time, and he has been around the team and coaching staff frequently this season. He was at Butler for their game against Xavier on Saturday. “Butler is a heck of an opportunity for me. They have had a history of playing walk-ons. If I deserve it, I think I’ll get the playing time,” said Dakich.
Purdue just recently started to pursue Dakich. “They (Purdue) actually came up to my dad (Dan Dakich) when he did their game at Wisconsin,” said Andrew. The conversation at the Wisconsin game led to Andrew visiting Purdue for their game against Michigan on March 6th. “The visit went well. I talked to Coach Painter before the game,” Dakich said about the Purdue game. “I’m going to wait until after the college season to see how I’ll fit in with the team,” Andrew commented.
Walking-on at Purdue or Butler are not his only options though. He is also looking into prep school for a post-graduate year to try to improve his recruiting status. The prep schools in the picture right now are New Hampton (NH) and IMG Academy (FL). He plans to visit New Hampton soon. “(At a prep school) I would get to work on getting stronger among other things. It’s pretty much all basketball at the prep schools. That would be really good, and my dad thinks I’m still growing too,” said Dakich. Dan is about 6-5 while Andrew is only 5-11.
There have been some rumors that Dakich would team up with Hamilton Heights star Alex Etherington at a prep school next season. “It’s possible. We like playing together, but it is up in the air. I have no idea right now,” said Dakich.
When will Andrew Dakich make a decision for his plans next season? “It’s going to be after the (college) season,” Dakich commented. That is when he will have more free time to discuss his decision with his father since he is busy with the NCAA tournament coming up. ”Hopefully I know by May or June,” said Dakich. He might play some AAU this spring since uncommitted seniors can play in events, and there is an evaluation period in late April. That could lead to a Division 1 scholarship offer.
