Rising sophomore Matt Holba is set to transfer to Guerin Catholic in Noblesville, Indiana from Chesterton in Northwest Indiana. Matt’s father, Tom, told Indiana Basketball Source that due to work his family will relocate to the Indianapolis area. Holba averaged 11 points per game for the 13-9 Chesterton Trojans this season.
Matt will finish the school year at Chesterton before moving to Indianapolis. “We are sad that we have to leave Chesterton but excited for the new opportunity,” said Tom Holba. Holba will join junior Aaron Brennan on the Guerin Catholic front line. Brennan already has scholarship offers from Indiana State, Loyola (Chicago), and IUPUI among others.
Matt will continue to play with the Meanstreets club out of Chicago in the spring and summer. “He is close with a lot of those guys…Ryan Fazekas (Michigan City Marquette), Drew Hackett (Munster), Davon Dillard (Bowman Academy). It is a good group so he will continue to play with them,” said Tom Holba.
Matt currently has a scholarship offer from Valparaiso University and has interest from many high-major programs. Most of the high-majors are waiting to see how his skill set develops over the next couple of years. He is currently 6-6 and has been an inside player until this point in his career. “Since the season ended (56-34 loss to Valparaiso in sectionals on March 1), we have been in the gym everyday working on guard and perimeter skills,” said Tom.
A couple of side notes on the Holba family…Tom Holba played quarterback at Michigan State. Matt’s sister Claire Holba is currently a sophomore on the IUPUI women’s basketball team. Athleticism is definitely in the blood for Matt.
