After playing in the Indiana-Kentucky Junior All-Star game Friday night, Kokomo's Tayler Persons committed to Northern Kentucky. NKU was Persons first and only offer up to this point. He has been playing well this spring and likely would have picked up more offers in July.
Persons averaged 17 points on 52% from the field and shot 37% from 3 this high school season. His leadership and toughness are unmatched in the class. He is built like a linebacker and uses that frame to get things done on both ends of the court. His play this spring for the Eric Gordon All-Stars is what attracted the attention of the Northern Kentucky coaching staff.
"They have been the team that has been talking to me the most," Persons said of Northern Kentucky. Persons will join Delphi's Cole Murray (2013) and Elkhart Memorial's Todd Johnson (2012) on the Northern Kentucky roster. Persons will be able to play either guard position for the Norse. "I can lead them to their first ever NCAA tournament game," said Persons about his motivation going to Northern Kentucky.
Persons has also been a 4-year starter at quarterback for Kokomo. Some speculated that he might choose football at the next level, but he has always said he was only interested in playing basketball in college. Persons is a solid pick-up for the young D1 Northern Kentucky program.
