Best Choice
#25 Gary Bonds, 6’7” PF Indianapolis Scecina 2015, played against the team he played with last season, Spiece Indy Heat, in the finals. Best Choice upset Indiana Elite-Team Indiana in the semifinals. His effort was good against Indy Heat but it didn’t lead to much production. Bonds will be with the 17u Spiece Indy Heat team this coming weekend in the Nike EYBL in LA.
#10 Zach Rutland, 5’9” PG Indianapolis Scecina 2015, could not be kept out of the lane all weekend. He is as quick as they come off the dribble. He was getting by very good athletes with ease. 5-9 is likely a stretch by an inch or two though so when he gets into the lane it is tough for him to score if helps comes over. His height is his biggest drawback. If he grows a few inches, his stock will be much better.
#11 Delano Coffy, 5’10” PG Indianapolis Chatard 2015, was up and down in the games that I watched Best Choice. A little undersized but has good quickness. He has a stocky build. He’s an above average shooter but he is streaky. He has a chance to be a D1 prospect, but I see him as a small college prospect at this point.
#34 Andrew Kus, 6’7” C Fort Wayne Canterbury 2015, first time seeing the big fella from Fort Wayne. He is a wide body. He doesn’t get off the floor well. He was pretty good around the basket, but not great against size. He’ll be a player for us to watch more closely this spring.
Club Elite Eastside
#33 Abe Haler, 6’1” SG New Castle HS 2015, great release with range. I didn’t see him put the ball on the floor to get to the rim. He shot 45% from 3 this season for New Castle. First impression is that he will likely be a small college prospect but we will need to see him more.
#11 Davious Webster, 6’3” SG Richmond HS 2015, good quickness. Solid handles. He had an off shooting game when I saw him. He did NOT shoot it well this season for Richmond. It looks like he could be a point guard or combo guard at 6-3.
Club Elite Indy Blue Chips
#1 Tyson Shumpert, 6’2” SG Warren Central HS 2015, first time seeing Shumpert and he was impressive. He’s a very explosive athlete. He was very good around the basket. His shot looked above average as well. One downside was that he took a handful of forced/contested/bad shots. Shumpert has a chance to be pretty good.
#3 Miles Irving, 5’8” PG Cathedral HS 2015, good quickness. He sees the floor well. His shot also looked pretty good. He’s only 5-7 or 5-8 at this point with a slight frame.
Club Elite Prospects
#22 Connor Umphress, 6’5” SF Columbus East HS 2015, was very impressive despite his team was severely over-matched. He did everything imaginable on the floor. He brought up the ball. He rebounded well. He posted up and scored. He hit a spot-up 3. I liked him when I saw him play against Ben Davis in the high school season and this game re-enforced my thought that he was pretty good. Low-Major to Mid-Major prospect.
Club Elite South
#43 Josh Martindale, 6’5” SF Bloomington HS South 2015, is likely done growing and he is working on expanding his game. He shot the ball well from 12-17 feet in the high school then Saturday he looked good beyond the arc. Martindale as chance to be a very good small college prospect.
#14 Johnny Jager, 5’11” PG Bloomington HS South 2015, didn’t do much offensively when I saw him play but it looks like he has added some muscle mass. He’s a strong, heady guard that can shoot the ball. Low-Major is likely his ceiling.
#3 Kooper Glick, 6’2” SF Columbus North HS 2015, good size/good strength. His shot is unorthodox which will make him streaky from the outside. He hit a couple of outside shots when I saw him Saturday.
Eric Gordon Central Stars
#21 Ryan Welage, 6’8” PF Greensburg HS 2015, had a very good weekend. He’s a legit 6-8 now. He has narrow shoulders, but he has good hands. He has a slight frame that is going to be tough to put muscle on. His touch from 14-17 feet is very good but he needs space to get his shot off. Solid Mid-Major prospect.
#22 Brennan Gillis, 6’5” PF Ben Davis HS 2015, did not have a very good weekend in my eyes. He got beat in a few spots defensively where he cannot afford to get beat. He has good strength and great hands. Gillis should be a beast on the boards but he doesn’t always get the production you would want from him. His mid-range jumper has come a long way over the last couple of years. I don’t think he is ever going to be quick enough to be a pure 3-man. Low-Major Plus
#25 Tahjai Teague, 6’7” SF Pike HS 2015, is loaded with the dreaded p-word…potential. Long doesn’t do Teague justice. He is all arms and legs. He finishes well around the rim. He can also shoot it and handle it for his size. He must improve in all areas though. Teague’s ceiling towers over his current skill level.
#3 Nick Rogers, 6’1” PG Traders Point Academy 2015, good length. Good size for a point guard. Good first step. Outside shot is streaky but when he catches in rhythm, he is very good. Decision making has been an Achilles Heal for him, but he is making some improvements to that area. He passed up some shots that he would have forced in the past. Mid-Major
#15 Michael Benkert, 6’4” SG Center Grove HS 2015, was really good at getting into the passing lanes. He was also good in transition. He has a great frame. He’s strong right now and is going only going to increase that. Benkert just does not have much lift off the floor. His shot is up and down. Those are two reasons why I have him as Mid-Major instead of High-Major.
#40 Anthony Jones, 6’4” SG Speedway HS 2015, is a player that looks much improved to me. He has great length. He’s a good athlete. He can handle it. He’s a good defender. His outside shot is his biggest weakness but it has improved over the last year. Jones has Mid-Major potential.
#32 Max Kurkowski, 6’5” SG Plainfield HS 2016, did not get much playing time this weekend but looked good when he did. He went off the dribble well in his limited minutes. He’s definitely one of the best shooters in the 2016 class. It looks like he has grown since I saw him a couple of months ago. Kurkowski should end up being 6-7 or taller from the looks of things. He’s definitely in the Mid-Major to High-Major discussion. He’s not there yet but could be soon.
Grassroots Indiana 2015- Lacy
#30 Josh Dunlop, 6’7” C Zionsville HS 2015, wide body. No lift off the floor. It looks like he is still learning how to play in the post. He did have a very nice post move on Saturday. Dunlop and Derrik Smits playing side by side could be tough. Dunlop is a small college prospect right now as a sophomore.
#14 Braden Hall, 5’7” PG Zionsville HS 2015, tiny but fun to watch with the ball. He passes it extremely well and fits the ball in tight spaces. He’s also a good shooter. He’s just 5-7 or 5-8 with a slight frame and that holds his game back right now.
#15 Jake Mann, 6’1” SG Zionsville HS 2015, was entirely catch and shoot this season for Zionsville. Saturday he was aggressive going off the dribble. Mann has a chance to be a very good small college prospect.
#5 Max Clifford, 6’2” G Roncalli HS 2015, first time seeing Clifford and he looked pretty good. Strong combo guard. He can shoot it. I’m interested to see him more this spring. He played junior varsity for Roncalli this season.
Grassroots Indiana 2015- Marshall
#23 Carter Skaggs, 6’4” SF Pioneer HS 2015, played really well Friday night. He has a versatile offensive game. He hit 3’s, posted up smaller defenders and can handle it a little bit. He even completed an alley-oop over a defender. The biggest thing with Skaggs is if he can defend on the perimeter against really good athletes. I’m also not sure if he can create off the dribble in the half court. I’ve had him as a Low-Major since the fall and I am going to keep him there until those two areas are more defined.
#42 Jordashe Mavunga, 6’4” SF Brownsburg HS 2015, is the brother of former Brownsburg and Miami (OH) star Julian Mavunga. Jordashe is a slasher and a scorer. He is not looking to give the ball up when he drives. He has good length and good quickness. His outside shot is poor.
#0 Chandler Spring, 6’3” SG Covington HS 2015, first time seeing Spring. Shooter. Quick release on his shot. His shot is consistent. I’m interested to see if he can do anything off of the dribble this spring.
#3 Keegan Kollmeyer, 6’1” PG Hamilton Southeastern HS 2015, shooter. Can score in transition against a defender. He looks like a potential small college prospect.
#32 Des Balentine, 6’1” PG Western HS 2015, looks exactly like his brother, D.J., who is at the University of Evansville now. He does not have his game though. He has a chance to be a small college prospect, but I don’t see D1 in his future.
Indiana Dawgz
#12 Jordan Collazo, 5’7” PG Portage HS 2015, quick. Good passer. Just extremely small and has a thin frame. If he can grow a little bit, he would be a nice small college prospect.
Indiana Elite- Diesel
#11 Grant Gaylor, 6’5” SF North Montgomery HS 2015, first game action observation of Gaylor. There are a lot of things to like about his game. He is long and bouncy. He competes on both ends. He’ll rebound. He does have a thin frame right now. He might grow a little bit more. He’s really good in the 7-16 foot range. His shooting motion creates a line-drive shot which limits his effectiveness from the outside right now.
#21 Trevor Waite, 6’2” PG Tri-West HS 2015, was very impressive this weekend. He can definitely play the point at 6-2 or 6-3. He’s a good athlete. He moves well laterally. He has a good first step on the offensive end. He’s pretty well built for a sophomore. I’m not quite sure how high Waite’s ceiling is yet, but he looks much improved from last year.
#13 Ryan Cline, 6’3” SG Carmel HS 2015, had a successful season for the state champion Carmel Greyhounds. He was almost entirely catch and shoot for them. He’s in a different role with Indiana Elite. He is handling the ball more. Defensively he is not great but he uses his length to bother quicker opponents. His bread and butter is definitely his shooting ability. Cline can hit shots off the dribble as well as the catch. He’s still growing.
#31 Keegan Culp, 6’6” SF Hamilton Southeastern HS 2015, didn’t shoot the ball well against Spiece Indy Heat in the tournament play but played well in other areas. His shooting ability is his biggest strength. He’s not afraid of contact on the defensive end. He uses his body well when defending quicker players. Culp doesn’t have much lift off the ground. If he can be a combo forward, it will help his college potential.
#55 Liam Duncan, 6’9” C Carmel HS 2015, showed some flashes of potential this weekend. He didn’t play any meaningful minutes this season for Carmel. He’s a wide body, not a very good athlete. His touch around the basket is improving steadily. It looks like he is into the game mentally more this spring. Duncan still has a chance to be pretty good if he is committed to improving his game.
#50 Seth Adelsperger, 6’11” C Peru HS 2015, has a lot of great tools to work with for a “big.” He is wiry right now and will be really strong down the road. He moves pretty well for a player his size/age. His ball skills need improvement. He’s good when he can catch and score without needing to dribble or make a move. Adelsperger has a nice touch around the basket. He’s still a project but he is getting that. He has a High-Major ceiling, but Mid-Major is likely more realistic for Adelsperger.
#33 Trent Larson, 6’4” SF Columbus North 2015, he did some nice things on the offensive end. He’s not an athlete but he showed that he can go off the dribble a little bit. He’s a solid outside shooter. Larson played junior varsity for a senior heavy Columbus North team this year. He should get some major minutes next season.
Indiana Elite-Team Indiana 2015
#1 Jalen Coleman, 6’4” SG Cathedral HS 2015, long and athletic. He will get into people defensively. He’s active on both ends. He is a natural scorer. He finds a way to put the ball in the hoop when it looks unlikely. Coleman looks like the #1 player in the class by a wide margin right now.
#34 Everett Duncan, 6’5” SF Evansville Harrison HS 2015, long and thin. One of the best outside shooters in the class. He moves well without the ball. He passes it well. He can handle it a little bit but needs to improve that area. Everett and Stanley are just so thin, I do not know if they can overcome that to be more than role players at the D1 level. Low-Major to Mid-Major
#20 Stanley Duncan, 6’4” SF Evansville Harrison HS 2015, very similar to Everett. They have the same build. Stanley is about an inch shorter than Everett right now. Stanley seems to get a few more opportunities around the basket than Everett. Low-Major to Mid-Major
#3 Hyron Edwards, 6’0” PG East Chicago Central HS 2015, sees the floor well. He has good pace to his game. His outside shot is improving. 6-0 is likely a stretch for Hyron and he looks to be done growing. When he is surrounded with talent like he is with Indiana Elite, he becomes a pure point guard. With East Chicago he looks to score more often. High-Major
#44 Josh Speidel, 6’6” PF Columbus North HS 2015, good body/good size. He’s active. He competes to rebound. He has limited lift when jumping. Speidel is shaping up to be a very good stretch 4 at the Low-Major to Mid-Major level.
#21 Devonte Campbell, 6’5” PF Culver Military Academy 2015, it looks like Campbell was at Culver this season but did not play. He is an imposing sight. 6-5 and likely close to 200 pounds, he looks like a college football player. He’s most effective around the basket. He moves well on the court. It looks like his range extends to about 15 feet.
Spiece Indy Heat 2015
#5 Bronson Kessinger, 6’6” PF Corydon Central HS 2015, impressed me with the way he played more than his actual stat lines. He was very aggressive and strong on the glass. One play really stands out…he went up and got a tough offensive rebound in traffic, came down and power dribbled then flushed it with two hands. He is very bouncy. He has added strength from a year ago although he could use more. It looks like Kessinger is really buying into being a 4-man this spring. He’s limiting his perimeter shots. Mid-Major to Mid-Major Plus
#0 KJ Walton, 6’3” SG Brownsburg HS 2015, his first step is what really stands out to me. He is explosive with it. He is also a good leaper. He’s best when he is getting to the basket. He has good body control because of his strength when he gets to the hoop. When he settles for outside shots, he is not as effective. Walton finds a way to get to the line often which is good because he is a good free-throw shooter. I don’t think he has solidified himself as a High-Major prospect yet, but he is not too far off. Walton needs to continue to work on his weak (left) hand.
#24 Derrik Smits, 6’10” C Zionsville HS 2015, is getting close to a High-Major offensive game. He shot is pure to the 3-point line now. He’s able to put the ball on the floor for a couple dribbles to get to the basket. He has good hands. He doesn’t have much strength and that holds his game back. Smits must rebound at a higher level to be a High-Major prospect. He is a true 6-10 and still growing at a steady rate. He will end up over 7-foot.
#13 Joey Morlan, 6’5” SF Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian HS 2015, has added strength from last year. He is going off the dribble more this spring. His outside shot looks to be extremely consistent. I would assume he going to grow a little bit more. If he does, it will really help his game.
#12 Chris Nunn, 5’10” PG Liberty Christian HS 2015, had some very good games for Spiece Indy Heat. He was crucial in Spiece’s 23-point second half comeback against Eric Gordon Central Stars. He scored all 14 of his points in the second half of that game. He’s more of scorer/shooting guard but he is pretty quick and strong.
#3 Bryce Moore, 6’2” PG Park Tudor HS 2015, good athlete, great size for a point guard. He just needs to slow down a little bit on the offensive end. He gets sped up and then makes bad decisions with the ball. When he lets the game come to him he looks good.
#25 Sean McDermott, 6’4” SG Pendleton Heights HS 2015, I’ve been calling him Kellen Dunham’s twin on Twitter. They have similar builds, baby-face and can really shoot the ball. McDermott isn’t to Dunham’s level yet but he is a nice player. His lateral quickness is a big concern. He will struggle to defend athletes. Low-Major seems most realistic for McDermott right now. He might still grow and that would change things for him.
Team Progeny 2015
#11 TJ Henderson, 6’0” PG Indianapolis Tindley HS 2015, has a good feel for the game. He’s aggressive. His shot looks good from the outside. I’m not completely sold on his lateral quickness on the defensive end. I would like to see him tested a few times to make that assessment. Low-Major
#5 Dre’on Lewis, 6’6” PF Indianapolis Northwest HS 2015, lefty with good size/body. He needs to anchor himself in the post right now instead of wanting to be a perimeter player. He will shoot it every time that he touches the ball. His shot just is not good enough to play on the perimeter right now. Lewis would be much better if he committed to being a post player.
#13 Bryce Hudson, 6’4” SF Warren Central 2015, very good athlete, long, high-motor but doesn’t get much production out of his activity. His shot is not very good. He needs time and space to get it off.
#10 Harris Brown, 5’11” PG Indianapolis Northwest HS 2015, put on a dunk show during a blow out win in pool play. He is an explosive guard. He can finish in traffic against contact because he is strong. When his outside shot is falling, he is tough to stop. His shot selection is suspect at times. I love his toughness. Low-Major Plus
#50 Vincent Phillips, 6’4” PF Pendleton Heights HS 2015, strong, undersized post. Finished well around the basket. Rebounded well. D3 {/iACL}
