Connor Umphress is a 6-foot-4-inch shooting guard. He has a versatile skill set. He is a good outside shooter. He handles the ball well. Umphress also rebounds well for a wing. He has a good frame and is pretty strong at this point. Umphress is an average athlete; below average for the D1 level. He has a very good feel for the game which helps make up for his athleticism.
His best attribute is definitely his outside shooting. “Connor is a guy that you can't leave; you have to know where he is on the floor because he can shoot it,” said Columbus East head coach Brent Chitty. He has a smooth outside stroke that is consistent and quick on the release. Umphress can shoot off of one or two dribbles, but more often than not, he prefers to just catch and shoot. Against Franklin Central he had a step back 3 that looked good fundamentally.
Umphress knows that he must improve his defense to play at the college level. “I'm trying to work on defense and rebounding,” said Umphress. That is always a big factor for guys without great lateral quickness. The college game is filled with fantastic athletes that are also skilled.
The recruiting game is just starting for for Umphress. He has visited Maryville (St. Louis) and Bethel so far. He also has D1 interest from Cornell and Wright State. One thing that will help him for the next level is the fact that he has a 3.79 grade point average. I do not believe too many schools saw Umphress last spring and summer because he played for a local club team that did not advance deep in many tournaments.
Umphress is one to watch in the 2015 class as we wind down the high school season and near the spring.
