The travel season is a month old already. We decided to take a look at five players that made waves by taking their game to another level.
Ryan Cline - 6-5 - SG - Indiana Elite-Diesel - 2015 - Mid Major Plus
One of the fastest risers of the spring thus far. Cline got the attention of many national scouts with his play throughout the Spiece Run 'N Slam. The attention was already coming from college coaches though. He has a Big Ten scholarship offer on the table from Purdue. Cline is a pure shooter with unlimited range. He has grown 2+ inches since the fall and is likely still growing. That extra size has given him an added edge over defenders. He uses screens very well off the ball. With the ball, he rarely blows by his defender, but he creates space with his body very well. Cline is inching his way to legitimate high-major prospect status.
C.J. Walker - 6-0 - PG - Spiece Indy Heat - 2016 - Mid Major
Walker has been an impact player since day one of high school, but he continues to prove that he can produce against top competition. He is playing up with the 17 and under Spiece Indy Heat team this season and he is doing an excellent job of leading them. Walker is a perfect compliment to Caleb Swanigan in the post. He is a very good post passer, and he knows how to play off a great big man since he has played the last two season with Trey Lyles. He has become a solid outside shooter although it is nearly a set shot that needs to be changed. Walker is off to a very good start to the spring.
Justin Thomas - 5-11 - PG - Eric Gordon-Green - 2016 - Mid Major
Thomas is coming off a strong sophomore season at Pike. He has continued to play well at the beginning of the spring. He does a great job of attacking the basket while still taking care of the ball. Thomas has a strong build that allows him to play through contact. He is playing up in the 17 and under division as well. The next step for his game is to become a knock down shooter from the outside.
Brachen Hazen - 6-7 - F - Spiece Indy Heat - 2016 - Low Major Plus/Mid Major
Hazen was all arms and legs last year at this time. He has now added muscle which has helped his athleticism. He is more cordinated now as well. Hazen has always been skilled especially in the midrange game. Hazen had a nice baseline drive against Mac Irvin Fire that he finished with a two-handed dunk. He was not coming close to doing that last year. That improvement bodes well for Hazen's overall potential. He is likely about down growing at 6-foot-7. His game has made a big jump.
Kyle Mallers - 6-7 - F - Spiece Indy Heat - 2016 - Low Major Plus
Hazen's teammate Kyle Mallers has made a similar leap. Mallers has improved his build as well. He says that he has added about 20 pounds of muscle since the start of 2014. He is a skilled player on the perimeter that will also do the dirty work inside. Mallers is poised for a big spring and summer with his improved strength.
