Indiana University announced that Devin Davis and Hanner Mosquera-Perea have been dismissed from the basketball team. It comes after Devin Davis was cited for possession of marijuana on Monday. Mosquera-Perea was reportedly with Davis at the time. Here is a look at what led to this event.
Recruiting
Hanner Mosquera-Perea was rated as the sixth best prospect in Indiana's 2012 class by Indiana Basketball Source. He was regarded highly by national sites which gave him a composite rating of 53rd according to 247sports.com. It was based off of all potential and not actual production. He entered Indiana with an extremely limited skill set.
Devin Davis wasn't as highly coveted out of high school as Mosquera-Perea was, but he was a solid recruit. Indiana Basketball Source ranked Davis as the seventh best college prospect in Indiana's 2013 class. The class wasn't as strong as the 2012 class in Indiana, but it still produced 40 Division I players. He had a national composite rank of 161st per 247sports.com with Rivals ranking him 127th in the class.
Playing Results
The hype was overblown for Mosquera-Perea as he entered college. The fact that he only played six minutes per game as a freshman and scored less than a point per game in those six minutes never seemed to calm the hype and expectations around him. As a junior this past season, Mosquerea-Perea averaged 6.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in about 19 minutes of action.
Davis did not see any action this past season due to an injury suffered in the fall. During his freshman year, he 2.4 points and 2.6 rebounds per game in about nine minutes of playing time. He played in 29 games as a freshman. He showed flashes that he could be a productive player for Indiana though. He had a nine point, six rebound game against Michigan late in the season. Davis also had a seven point, seven rebound game against the eventual national champions, UCONN.
Off the Court
Unfortunately for both players, off the court incidents led to their dismissal from the Indiana University basketball team. As a sophomore, Mosquera-Perea was cited for OWI during the season. He was only suspended for two games after the incident.
Davis was critically injured after being hit by Emmitt Holt's car in the fall. Davis was deemed responsible for the accident, but Davis and Holt had both been drinking. Both players were underage at the time of the accident.
On Monday Davis was cited for marijuana possession while Mosquera-Perea was with Davis at the time. Davis was immediately suspended from the team while Mosquera-Perea's involvement was investigated by Indiana. After review, both players were dismissed from the team on Wednesday.
Future
Mosquera-Perea has one season of eligibility left while Davis will have three. Davis is still recovery from his head injury, but I believe, his progress was going well. Each player has a checked past now, but there is no doubt that Division I teams will be eager to give them another chance. It is just a matter if they make the most of their next opportunity. Hopefully they do.
