2016 forward Adida Ikongshul has been one of the biggest movers in the state of Indiana. Ikongshul has received three scholarship offers – Western Michigan, Illinois-Chicago, Austin Peay – since July started. He is a unique prospect as he moved to America just one year ago. Here is more on Ikongshul's background and potential.
Adida Ikongshul emerged at Shawe Memorial High School just a few months after arriving in the States. Ikongshul is a native of Nigeria but speaks English better than most American students as English is the official language of Nigeria. Ikongshul pointed out to me, Nigeria was formerly a British Colony.
The transition has been a positive one for Ikonshul, but it has not always been easy.
“I miss my family sometimes and I miss the food back at home. I hope to go back and visit sometime in the future. I miss Garri soup and Afang soup with some pepper soup,” said Ikongshul.
As a Nigerian basketball player, I figured that he would be a major Hakeem Olajuwon fan. The Hall of Fame basketball player is the most famous person from Nigeria to Americans. The living conditions in Nigeria were a barrier to that happening.
Growing up, I heard of Hakeem Olajuwon. It's not until I got here that I began to watch his tapes. He was really good and I hear he is doing some stuff back home to help young basketball players. Great man.
Ikongshul posted tremendous statistics as a junior while adjusting to a new way of life. He averaged over 21 points and 12 rebounds per game. The athletic forward continued to perform well on the travel circuit for Indiana Elite Central. Competition was much tougher on the travel circuit than he saw at Shawe Memorial but Ikongshul was efficient and productive throughout the spring and summer.
Like most non-Americans, basketball was not the first sport for Adida Ikongshul. He started off with soccer then played volleyball before moving to basketball.
“I think, I could play college volleyball too. It definitely helped me get some bounce,” said Ikongshul.
The volleyball leaping ability and explosion shines on the basketball court. His skill set has a solid fundation but it is still developing. Ikongshul's size at 6-foot-5 and athleticism make up for any skill deficiency at the high school level.
When looking at Ikongshul's skill level, the fact that he has only been playing basketball for a handful of years needs to be factored in.
“I picked up basketball at age 13 and I have been in love with it since then,” said the 2016 prospect.
In that context, Adida Ikongshul's skill level is impressive. He has a focused and positive attitude on the court. All signs point to Iknogshul having a strong work ethic as well. Combine those intangibles with the short time that he has been playing basketball and the future of Ikongshul's game looks promising.
Adida Ikongshul is a player and person with major long-term potential.
