2016 forward Reggie Jones of Marion High School verbally committed to the University of New Orleans on Monday afternoon. Jones has a chance to be a big-time performer for New Orleans in the Southland Conference. Here is more on Reggie Jones' commitment.
Jones started his high school career at Richmond High School before transferring to Marion for his sophomore year. Jones has been regarded as a college prospect since he began high school. A couple of injuries slowed his progress a bit, but Jones has shown improvement over the last couple of years despite that. Indiana Basketball Source featured Jones at length in this article.
There were a few reasons why Reggie Jones selected New Orleans.
"The fact that the head coach has come down multiple times to watch me play made New Orleans stand out," said Reggie Jones.
New Orleans watched Jones a couple times recently. The staff watched Marion play Mississinewa and Lafayette Jeff. They made him a priority in the 2016 class in the last few months. Jones recently had an in-home visit with head coach Mark Slessinger as well.
Reggie Jones is a high-potential prospect as he finishes his career at Marion High School. He's a very good athlete while standing a true 6-foot-5, if not 6-foot-6. Jones will be able to be used in a number of different areas at the University of New Orleans. His size, length and athleticism will allow him to play as a wing or a power forward in a small-ball lineup.
He could be a perfect option as a small-ball power forward as more and more teams play like the Golden State Warriors. His form is good on his outside shot, if the consistency improves it will be impossible for power forwards to guard him on the perimeter. On the defensive end, his athleticism and length will allow him to switch onto any player and be comfortable at that level.
"I think Coach Slessinger will let me showcase my talents," said Jones.
New Orleans plays in the Southland Conference with the other notable teams being Stephen F. Austin, Incarnate Word, and Sam Houston State. Reggie Jones joins A.J. Cheeseman from Georgia in New Orleans' 2016 class. New Orleans also has Davontavean Martin and Lamont Berzat committed for the 2017 class already. Martin has a chance to be a special player for New Orleans.
Reggie Jones is the 18th player (not counting La Lumiere players) in the 2016 class from Indiana to commit/sign to play Division I basketball.
