Scouting Report | James Blackmon, jr. was the first player of the 2014 class to commit when he committed to play for Indiana University in early September. His dad, James Blackmon, you may remember was Mr. Basketball in 1982 and played his career at the University of Kentucky. Blackmon, jr. is best known for his shooting ability right now. He shoots it really well off the catch and off the dribble. It is rare for someone his age to shoot it off the dribble as well as he does. Blackmon isn't very explosive right now and struggles against strong, quick, athlete defenders. His length is starting to make-up for the fact that he isn't the most explosive athlete.
vs. East Chicago had 42 points and 8 rebounds. He was 7-14 from 3 and 13-23 overall from the field. He has a lightning quick release on his shot. He has a pretty good first step. He's a good leaper. Blackmon has average to slightly above average handles. He's more than a straight line driver as he has multiple change of direction moves off the dribble.
vs. Chatard the Indiana University verbal commit got off to a slow start Saturday. He was just 1-7 from the field in the first quarter. That changed drastically in the second period. He went on a spree and scored 17 points in the quarter, and he did not stop after that. He went on to get 39 points and 12 rebounds while also doing a large share of the ball-handling for Luers. He is averaging over 30 points per game on the young season. Blackmon looked explosive off the floor on a transition dunk, showing no signs of his ACL tear from last season.
