A handful of months ago, Indiana Basketball Source looked at Romeo Langford as a player ready for the elite level nationally. The next player in Indiana ready for that level is 2019 wing Keion Brooks Jr. of Fort Wayne North Side. Here’s an update on Keion Brooks’ game, recruitment and future.
Keion Brooks received his first college scholarship offer over the weekend. The offer came from the in-state Purdue Boilermakers. Purdue is one of the schools recruiting Brooks the hardest early in his high school career. Brooks said that he went to a couple Purdue game during the season.
“I like Purdue a lot,” said Keion Brook Jr. “Mackey Arena is a nice place to play in, I’ve played in it before at a camp, but the crowd is on top of you.”
Michigan State is another school that is actively recruiting Brooks at this early stage. He said that he went to three Michigan State games this season on unofficial visits. East Lansing is just a couple hours away from Fort Wayne. Michigan State has recruited Fort Wayne hard during Tom Izzo’s tenure.
Brooks told Indiana Basketball Source that Butler and Virginia are recruiting him as well.
Keion Brooks Jr. had a fantastic freshman year for Fort Wayne North Side. He averaged 17 points per game for one of the top 4A teams in the state. Shabaz Khaliq’s team went 18-7 this season with Brooks and 2017 power forward Jaylen Butz leading the way.
“I played pretty well,” said Brooks.” I didn’t have as much team success as I wanted, but, for me, individually I thought I made a good progression going from middle school to high school.“
“A good progression” is quite an understatement. He was one of the most productive players in Indiana while playing against a strong schedule. His growth (literal growth and as a player) over the last year has been excellent. He has grown about three inches in the last calendar year with possibly more to come. His game has expanded and has been refined. His jump shot has added range and consistency over the last 12 months.
Brooks is 6-foot-7 and on the verge of 6-foot-8. He has the natural size and athleticism to play the wing at the next level. At this point, Brooks has a very thin build. He is focused on changing that.
“Right now, I’ve been working on getting into the weight room getting stronger, faster, getting more agile because if I’m going to play on the perimeter, I have to be able to guard perimeter guys so I’ve been working on that.”
That is part of the scary/exciting (depending on your point of view) about Keion Brooks Jr. He is nowhere close to his ceiling from a physical standpoint yet. He’s already a good athlete, and his athleticism will increase to an elite level when he gets done growing and adds muscle to his frame.
Brooks got his feet wet at the 17U division during the first evaluation period. He held his own for the Indy Hoosiers in NYC. He averaged 5.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in limited playing time. Over the weekend, he played with his 15U age group and excelled. He didn’t shoot the ball well from the outside, but still averaged 20 points and eight rebounds per game.
Keion Brooks Jr. is producing at a high level at the high school level, 15U level and held his own at the 17U level. The combination of his current production and potential has him destined to be the next elite player in the state.
