McElvene reportedly collapsed at his family home in Fort Wayne Thursday morning. He was later pronounced dead. The preliminary reports by Glenn Marini, the sports Director at WANE-TV in Fort Wayne, is that an enlarged heart was the cause of death.
McElvene averaged 6.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game as a redshirt freshman for the University of Dayton. He was showing great promise as a basketball player under Archie Miller. He completely changed his body during his time at Dayton. There were high expectations for his final three seasons at Dayton.
In my limited interactions with McElvene, he was always joking around with teammates. Many former teammates are echoing those thoughts on Twitter.
