Hyron Edwards, a 2015 graduate of East Chicago Central, committed to Texas Tech on Saturday. Edwards is a sophomore at Trinity Valley Community College in Texas this year.
Edwards was offered early in high school by Indiana and Purdue while playing for Indiana Elite. Edwards thrived with Indiana Elite as he went into his sophomore year. He was always a good athlete. With the Duncan twins (Everett & Stanley) spacing the floor, Edwards was great. He would get into the lane and either finished the play himself or kicked to the twins for an open three-pointer.
The recruitment and play of Edwards leveled off going into his junior season. Schools that recruited Edwards early like Purdue and Indiana started to fade from the picture. Questions about his academic standing were added to the questions about his play.
Edwards had a stellar senior year for East Chicago Central. ECC went 20-4 during his senior year, but lost in the sectional final to Munster. He was worthy of a spot on the Indiana All-Star team, but he was left off in 2015. Edwards ended up signing with Trinity Valley Community College in the spring of 2015.
With Trinity Valley, Edwards scored 13.7 points and dished out 5.5 assists per game as a freshman. TVCC went 33-2 with Edwards leading the way. Trinity Valley lost in quarterfinals of the NJCAA national tournament.
Edwards picked Texas Tech over UTEP. He likely would have received more recruiting interest if he played out the season. Chris Beard is entering his first year as head coach of Texas Tech. He was at Arkansas-Little Rock last year. Little Rock played at a slow tempo under Beard. It will be interesting to see if his team plays at that tempo with Texas Tech. Edwards fits best in a fast tempo like they play at Trinity Valley.
