1A & 2A Regional Preview

Here is a look at the regional games and match-ups for regionals in class 1A and 2A. All games are Saturday.

Frankfort Regional

Liberty Christian (19-5) vs. Union (Modoc) (17-5)

Rockville (25-0) vs. Lafayette Central Catholic (16-8)

Rockville is the only undefeated team left in the state. They are led by senior Lane Mahurin. Mahurin will play college basketball at Indiana Wesleyan. He is averaging 22 points per game this season while shooting 68% from the field. Rockville is not invincible though. Lafayette Central Catholic and Liberty Christian pose strong threats to Rockville. Liberty Christian is led by sophomore guard Chris Nunn (15ppg). Lafayette Central Catholic is a senior laden team with Andrew Hubertz leading the way for them.

Triton Regional

21st Century-Gary (15-7) vs. Pioneer (20-3)

Triton (17-5) vs. Fort Wayne Canterbury (15-8)

This looks like a completely even regional line-up. Triton’s Clay Yeo has had a fantastic year. He is averaging nearly 27 points per game. Pioneer features one of the best unknown players in sophomore Carter Skaggs. Trent VanHorn and Grant Sinn are a formidable duo for Canterbury. This will be a very competitive and entertaining regional.

Loogootee Regional

Orleans (13-10) vs. Borden (20-3)

Barr-Reeve (23-1) vs. Northeast Dubois (12-12)

Barr-Reeve is the substantial favorite in the Loogootee Regional. Barr-Reeve survived the tough Loogootee Sectional, so they should be comfortable with the surroundings. Orleans, Borden and Northeast Dubois are all capable of pulling the upset and beating Barr-Reeve though.

Martinsville Regional

Baptist Academy (13-11) vs. University (13-11)

Jac-Cen-Del (8-15) vs. Clay City (15-8)

This is the weakest of the regionals. Baptist Academy is the highest ranked team by the Sagarin Ratings, they come in at 226th overall in the state. It could make for competitive games though. Baptist, University and Clay City are closely grouped in the Sagarin Ratings.

2A Preview

Tipton Regional

Delphi (19-5) vs. Tipton (23-2)

Northfield (17-7)  vs. Wapahani (21-3)

For 2A, this is a high-powered regional. Tipton is the slight favorite over Wapahani but Delphi has a chance if Cole Murray catches fire from the outside. Tipton is led by St. Louis-bound Mike Crawford. Crawford is the all-time leading scorer in the basketball rich history of Tipton. He recently went over the 2,000 career point mark. Wapahani is led by junior Grant Evans (Wright State), Jacob Foster and Tanner Davis. Evans scores about 18 points per game while Foster scores 17 points and grabs 10 rebounds.

North Judson Regional

Fort Wayne Bishop Luers (15-6) vs. Boone Grove (14-8)

LaVille (18-6) vs. Bowman Academy (14-9)

Fort Wayne Luers and Bowman Academy should cruise to meet each other in the regional final. Bowman will not have an answer for James Blackmon Jr. and Randon Jackson puts Luers on the winning side in this one. Bowman will have the size advantage with players like Justin King and Davon Dillard. Luers is one of the favorites in 2A with Park Tudor’s elimination.

Southridge Regional

Perry Central (21-3) vs. Switzerland County (18-4)

Linton-Stockton (21-3) vs. Clarksville(18-5)

Clarksville is the favorite despite having the most loses in the field. Clarksville is led by Calvin and Aidan McEwen. Calvin is a junior and an outside threat while Aidan is a senior and likes to get to the basket. Perry Central and Linton-Stockton have great chances to capture the regional title though  with Switzerland County not completely out of the picture.

Connersville Regional

Speedway (19-4) vs. Indianapolis Scecina (13-9)

Union County (18-6) vs. Broad Ripple (16-7)

One reason that class basketball has not been successful is because of the extra driving required for fans to attend games. A classic case is the Connersville Regional. There are three schools from Indianapolis but those fan bases are forced to drive 60+ miles to attend the game. It is really unacceptable.

The games should be good though. Speedway is one of the more athletic teams that you will see in Indiana with Justin Brent, Anthony Jones and Jordan Furlow. Those three guards can cause havoc. Scecina received a huge boost when Gary Bonds was made eligible for the end of the season. Bonds played his freshman year at Scecina then transferred to Warren Central over the summer then transferred back to Scecina in January. Scecina against Speedway should be a very good game. Broad Ripple completely shocked me when they beat Park Tudor for the second time in three weeks.
