2017 forward Zach Gunn committed to Ball State University on Thursday, according to a report by Dakota Crawford.
Zach Gunn burst on the scene by getting an offer from Indiana before his freshman year at Hamilton Southeastern. Gunn went on to be a big piece for HSE’s sectional championship team as a freshman. He excelled as Eric Davidson and Tyler Jenkins set him up for corner three-pointers.
The lefty remained one of the best shooting forwards in the state throughout his high school career. He put up big rebounding numbers over his career as well. Gunn leaves Hamilton Southeastern as the leading scorer and rebounder in the history of the school. That is a big accomplishment with players like Gary Harris, Zak Irvin and Joe Reitz coming before him.
Gunn joins Ishmael El-Amin, the son of Khalid El-Amin, in Ball State’s 2017 recruiting class. The Cardinals lose forwards Franko House and Ryan Webber, so Gunn could find a spot in the rotation early. Gunn’s shooting ability is his ticket into the rotation. The Cardinals shot a respectable 37.6% from three-point range this season.
Dakota Crawford of The Star Press reported that Indiana firing Tom Crean played a part in his commitment. Gunn was trying to go to Indiana throughout his senior year. Indiana wasn’t ready to accept his commitment but kept the recruitment open. Many other schools backed Gunn in this process.
Zach Gunn definitely has the skill set to contribute at Ball State. He was in fantastic shape during his senior year. He played inside to outside as well. That made him consistent and really tough to stop at the high school level. If Gunn remains focused on conditioning and improving, he could end up being a major piece for Ball State over the next four year.
