2017 wing Grant Smith has committed to Indiana Wesleyan University. It is another big recruiting win for Indiana Wesleyan.
Smith led Connersville’s run to the Regional final in his senior year. Classmate Beau Isaacs was injured in the Sectional opener, and Smith took on extra responsibilities for the next few games. He turned heads as he had his hand in nearly everything that Connersville did.
Smith racked up NAIA and Division II offers this season. He piqued the interest of my Division I coaches along the way. Most of them thought Smith could play at the D1 level with a prep school year or a stop at a junior college. Smith opted to play for the high-level NAIA program, Indiana Wesleyan.
Indiana Wesleyan has been built into a national power at that level by getting borderline D1 prospects and D1 transfers. IWU lost in the national semifinals this season. Greg Tonagel already stole Warsaw’s Kyle Mangas in the 2017 class from D1 coaches. Now, he adds Grant Smith to the recruiting class. Those are two skilled, tough players.
Smith is a fantastic vertical athlete. He had a ton of breakaway dunks this season by jumping the passing lanes on the defensive end. Along with his highlight reel dunks, Smith is a wonderful passer and tough on the glass. He is one of the best competitors in Indiana’s 2017 class.
