Ferguson had a great senior year for Homestead. He averaged 18.7 points. 5.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. His play had Homestead as one of the top 15-20 teams in the state for most of the year. The Spartans made it to the Logansport Regional before falling to Fort Wayne North Side. They finished the season 23-4.
Ferguson had a host of NAIA and Division II scholarship offers. Programs like Goshen, Purdue-Northwest, William Jewell and Fairmont State extended offers to Ferguson before the end of his senior season. His dream was to play Division I basketball, so he pushed for a chance at that level. After his year wrapped up, Stetson offered him a walk-on opportunity. He visited Stetson, Nova Southeastern, Marist and Colgate a couple weeks ago. An offer from Colgate resulted from that visit tour.
“They saw something in me that other colleges didn’t see,” Jack Ferguson said of Colgate’s coaching staff.
Because of that vision by the Colgate staff, Ferguson gets a chance to accomplish his next goal.
“My dream from eighth grade year was to play in the NCAA Tournament and I made it my goal. It’s going to happen!”
Ferguson joins Homestead product Dana Batt at Colgate. Batt was a key member of the 2015 state championship team. He has been a role player for Colgate in his first two seasons with the Patriot League program.
The Colgate coaching staff has relayed some expectations for his role with the team.
“They have senior guards, but they think I can put pressure on them and hopefully beat some of them out,” Ferguson said of his expected role. “But I will be playing a big role, for sure, my sophomore year and a major role in the future for Colgate.”
