Crispus Attucks guard Nike Sibande committed to Miami of Ohio Monday. The high-octane guard joins Jalen Adaway, Isaiah Coleman-Lands and Darrian Ringo as Indiana natives joining Jack Owens' first team.
Indiana Basketball Source has been high on Nike Sibande for the last year and half. The combination of production and potential is rare in a high school prospect. Sibande has a competitive drive that has him rebounding, defending and doing all the things to help his team win. He wasn't wrapped up in fitting a certain mold in high school. Sibande just went out and played. He racked up huge rebounding numbers for a guard. Most high school players would be scared of getting labeled a forward, which is why many players get sidetracked.
Nike Sibande signed a letter of intent with IUPUI in November. The next day, Sibande asked out of the commitment. That's an extremely rare occurrence. Jason Gardner decided to release Sibande from the commitment instead of forcing him to sit out or attend a junior college/prep school next year. It was a big blow to IUPUI's recruiting class.
Sibande's shooting has improved greatly over the last year. His shooting fundamentals were there - footwork, release, rotation. He has worked to take his consistency to a new level in the past 18 months. There is a good chance that he becomes a fantastic shooter in the next few years.
The upside of Nike Sibande is tremendous. If he stays focused and dedicated to improving, Sibande has a chance to be a multiple time all-conference player. He has high-major athleticism. He has shown the motor and competitiveness to get it done at that level. In order to reach all-MAC status, Sibande will need to refine his ball-handling and shooting, while still doing the dirty work of rebounding and defending.
The final hurdle for Sibande to join Miami is qualifying academically. He takes his standardized test this coming weekend. It is expected that he will score high enough to qualify.
