The Crossroads Elite Invitational has been a strong camp for many years now. The 2017 crop has plenty of talent as well. Here are 13 standouts from Saturday.
Jalen Johnson – 6-6 – Sun Prairie (Wisc.) – 2020
Johnson is definitely in the running for best player and best prospect of the 2017 Crossroads Elite Invitational. He’s a true guard at 6-foot-6. He has the athleticism to get to the basket on a consistent basis, and once he is there, he finishes above the rim. Johnson stood out with ease in a field of talented players.
Walker Kessler – 6-9 – Landmark Christian (Ga.) – 2020
Kessler was fantastic Saturday. He displayed a complete skill set of blocking shots, handling the ball, scoring on the block and rebounding at a high level. Kessler has a soft touch and good footwork from the post. He’s a true 6-foot-9 at this point. His athleticism is still developing but he has a solid first step when putting the ball on the floor.
Caleb Furst – 6-7 – Blackhawk Christian (Ind.) – 2021
Saturday was the first time seeing the talented Fort Wayne prospect Caleb Furst. He was quite impressive. He’s a good overall athlete at 6-foot-7. The lefty has the ability to knock down mid-range shots with a quick release. He runs the floor well. There is a lot of potential to Furst’s game.
Tre Coleman – 6-5 – Jeffersonville (Ind.) – 2020
Coleman was impressive in the open court. He had a number of tough finishes over and through defenders. He played with consistent energy throughout the day. His size, strength, athleticism and competitiveness make him a player to watch in 2020.
Ethan Morton – 6-5 – Butler Area (Pa.) – 2020
Morton was one of the top shooters Saturday. At a legitimate 6-foot-5, Morton has the size to get his shot off against most defenders. He has the handles to create a bit of space off the bounce as well. He preferred rhythm dribbles into an outside shot instead of getting to the lane off the dribble. There’s a lot to like about his game going forward.
Adrian Caldwell – 6-4 – Cy-Fair (Texas) – 2020
Caldwell opened my eyes with his competitiveness and toughness. He was pressuring full court and forcing turnovers because of it. He’s 6-foot-4 with excellent feet and lateral quickness. His anticipation and effort make him a really tough defender. Offensively, he is best as a slasher. When he gets the ball to the paint, he’s going to score. It was fun watching Caldwell compete in this setting.
Maxwell Land – 6-2 – Moeller (Ohio) – 2020
Land’s athleticism caught my attention then he kept it with his passing. Land was a player that was looking to set up his teammates first and score second. The lefty fed the post and read defenses quite well. He has the ability to keep the defense honest with his scoring as well. Land was good from start to finish Saturday.
Davion Bradford – 6-9 – Christian Brothers (Mo.) – 2020
Bradford stood out with his size, athleticism and coordination. His aggressiveness made him productive in this setting. He was a dominant force on the glass with his good hands and physical tools. The overall tools are there for Bradford to become a major player down the road.
Lamontay Daugherty – 6-5 – DuQuoin (Ill.) – 2020
Aggressive and athletic sums up Daugherty. He was looking to dunk at every opportunity. His attacking style produced excellent results. His displayed enough ball-handling savvy to execute one on one drives and spin moves. He took the action right at bigger opponents like Davion Bradford and succeeded.
MarJon Beauchamp – 6-4 – Nathan Hale (Wash.) – 2020
Long and lanky, Beauchamp is a smooth driver and finisher. His extremely long arms and ball-handling ability make him a nightmare off the dribble. He’s able to finish with great efficiency once he gets to the paint. His best basketball is well in front of him.
Garvin Clark – 5-10 – Euclid (Ohio) – 2020
Clark was one of the quickest players in the camp. Clark used his speed and quickness to get to the basket on a regular basis Saturday. He was a really creative finisher when he reached the paint as well. Best of all, Clark played with unselfishness. He made a number of good passes while reading the defense.
Javon Ruffin – 6-3 – Isidore Newman (La.) – 2021
Ruffin was bombing three-pointers throughout the day. He pushed double digit three-pointers in the two games that I watched. He doesn’t have textbook mechanics but his release is consistent with rotation and arc. He’s a big guard for his class. Ruffin showed that he was a decent overall athlete as well.
Mike Saunders – 5-10 – Lawrence North (Ind.) – 2020
Saunders had a good day Saturday. It was a mix of scoring in transition, getting to the basket off the dribble in the half court and hitting three-pointers for Saunders. It was a steady, good showing for Saunders.
