2015 Mr. Basketball Caleb Swanigan was drafted by the Portland Trailblazers in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft. OG Anunoby, Thomas Bryant and Alec Peters were also drafted.
Caleb Swanigan's fantastic journey now takes him to Portland. Analytical draft models rated Swanigan as a lottery pick. The eye-test wasn't as kind to Swanigan. He made it into the first round for guaranteed money, and he has a chance to prove himself as an NBA player.
Swanigan averaged 18.5 points and 12.5 rebounds as a sophomore at Purdue. His jump in three-point shooting (29.2% to 44.7%) made a big difference in his draft stock. The ability to stretch the floor will be a major key to Swanigan's career.
OG Anunoby went 23rd to Toronto. He was projected as a lottery pick in the preseason. An injury during the college season might have pushed him to the 23rd spot. His versatility at 6-foot-8 is his biggest asset in the NBA. He'll be able to defend multiple positions. If his offensive game comes around, Anunoby will have a long NBA career.
Thomas Bryant was projected to be a first-round pick a year ago. He was selected in the second round by the Lakers at 42.
Valparaiso's Alec Peters was selected at 54 by the Phoenix Suns. He put up 23 points and 10 rebounds per game as a senior. His NBA career will be predicated on his three-point shooter. He will be a specialist at that level.
James Blackmon Jr. went undrafted but will sign with the 76ers.
VJ Beachem also went undrafted. He will sign a free agent contract with the Timberwolves.
