The Nike EYBL kicked off Friday night at the Grand Park Fieldhouse. It was a night of big names producing at a high level.
Ohio State commitment Alonzo Gaffney started the night off by knocking down five three-pointers in the first half. He didn’t score inside the arc outside of a single free throw. He was a force on the glass down the stretch for All-Ohio Red. He racked up the majority of his 10 rebounds in the second half in AOR’s win over Meanstreets.
Speaking of Meanstreets, they had a couple of noteworthy performances. Romeo Weems was unstoppable early as he got to the paint off the dribble then used his length to hit mid-range shots over the shot blockers of All-Ohio Red. He finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, but he had 14 in the first half.
Brandon Newman was the bright spot for Meanstreets in the second half. He scored 12 of his 21 after halftime. Newman was mostly a three-point threat against All-Ohio Red as he went 5-12 from deep. So far this spring, Newman has proven to be a high-level shooter. He was more confident off the dribble in the second half as shots were falling.
Keion Brooks is on a mission this spring. Against The Family, Brooks recorded 25 points and seven rebounds. He has been playing with supreme confidence with his shot and slashing game. It seemed like each time I turned to get a glimpse of the Indy Heat game, Brooks was doing something special. He had a dunk down the lane that woke up the entire fieldhouse. Brooks was simply fantastic.
Although he didn’t have the huge game that Brooks did, Trayce Jackson-Davis ended up knocking down a corner three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Indy Heat a win over The Family. It was his only three-point attempt of the game. He finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
In terms of highlight plays, I don’t think anyone had more than Kansas commitment Markese Jacobs. At 5-11, Jacobs pounding dunks left and right. He finished with 34 points in a win over Howard Pulley. Jacobs put on a show for the crowd Friday night.
David Roddy is an undersized post player that knows how to use his strength and get himself in the right positions to be productive. He finished with 24 points, seven rebounds and three assists. He had a few shots thrown back at him because he’s not the greatest athlete, but he never gives up on plays. That makes him highly productive.
The PSA Cardinals were rocked by Expressions Elite, but Cole Anthony recorded a triple-double with 16 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. He was the true bright spot for PSA without much help from his teammates. He does a great job of attacking without being wild. That makes him really tough in the mid-range because he can pull-up at any point. There’s a reason why he is the top point guard in the 2019 class.
