Ben Davis center Dawand Jones committed to Ohio State for football Wednesday. He had basketball offers before high-major football programs came into the picture.
The 6-foot-7-inch Jones has been a dominant force for Ben Davis this season for the basketball team. It was also his second year playing football. He has stated many times that basketball is his love, but his size and physical tools will allow him to play football at the highest level. He has extremely long arms, huge hands, and agile feet for his 375-pound frame.
He was a Junior Indiana All-Star last year as he was unstoppable in the paint. His conditioning limited last year, but he has improved that area this season. The production and efficiency piqued the interest of college basketball teams. Jones received offers from Ball State, Kent State, Bowling Green, and Cleveland State for basketball. With his performance as a senior, Jones would have been a problem for teams in those leagues.
This fall, the elite football programs began calling. USC, Florida State, Penn State, Florida, Auburn, Michigan, Oregon, and others offer him a scholarship. In the end, it was Indiana, Penn State, USC, and Ohio State.
Jones has a great chance of being named to the Indiana All-Star team. The Giants are 12-6 could win Sectional 11 on the backs of Jones and Jalen Windham, especially with the burden of his football recruitment out of the way.
