Zionsville forward Nathan Childress has accepted a preferred walk-on spot with Indiana University. The 2019 prospect was committed to Bethel before re-opening his recruitment a couple of weeks ago. (Photo by Katie Childress: Childress is holding the sectional trophy.)
Childress is an athletic forward that has developed his outside shooting in the last year. He averaged 14.5 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.7 steals, and 1.7 blocks per game as a senior. He hit 36% of his 59 three-point attempts and 70% from the free throw line. Childress has the potential to become a steady shooter in spot-up situations.
Last summer, Childress had plenty of D2 and NAIA offers before picking Bethel College. After helping Zionsville to a sectional title, Childress decided to de-commit from Bethel. A week after his de-commitment, Bethel head coach Ryne Lightfoot stepped down from the position.
Like any walk-on, finding playing time will be an uphill battle. He is more athletic and skilled than the majority of walk-ons. That will make him valuable in practice and give him a chance to get on the floor in games.
