UAA 17U: First Weekend Stats

The Under Armour Association had its first set of 17U games last weekend. Here is a dive into the advanced stats early in the season. (Pictured: Mike Saunders)

The order is based off Win Shares. Four games isn't a great set of data, but it can give some glimpse of what will end up happening for the course of the season.

Grassroots Sizzle out of Minnesota has two of the top prospects in the league - Jalen Suggs and Chet Holmgren. Suggs led the Association in Win Shares and Holmgren was third after the first weekend. That was also after throwing out one Grassroots Sizzle game because the scorekeeper didn't record misses. It looked like the rest of the stats - rebounds, assists, steals, etc. - might have been okay, but I decided to disregard the entire game. Win Shares is impacted by minutes played, so it is impressive that Suggs and Holmgren were still at the top with the game excluded.

Here are the top national Win Shares leaders:

Holmgren and Max Christie of the Illinois Wolves are 2021 prospects. On the other side, Kendall Lewis is a 2019 prospect. Lewis has recently picked up Nebraska, Southern Illinois, and App State offers. Julian Champagnie was originaly 2019 before opting for a post-graduate season.

In terms of Midwest standouts, 2021 shooting guard Max Christie leads the way. He's a dynamic scorer and shooter. His stats backed that up over the four games play in Aurora las week. Josiah Fulcher is a 2020 point guard from Lima, Ohio. He didn't turn the ball over and got to the free throw line a lot in the four games. Muhammed Njie is a center that rebounds, blocks shots, and finishes at the rim. His rebounding and defense propelled him to the top of the list.

Chris Hodges of the Illinois Wolves is another big, strong forward that dominates around the rim. He shot 77.3% from the field over four games.

The top Indiana player was Anthony Neal from South Bend Clay. He's another long-armed shot blocker, rebounder, and rim finisher. He shot 78.9% from two-point range in the four games. Neal's G3 GRIND teammate Mike Saunders was the second Indiana player on the list and 11th overall from the Midwest teams.
