Derrik Smits, Drew Lutz, Sean East, and Jair Rodgers made college commitments over the weekend. Smits and Rodgers are transfers. Here are more details on all four players. (Pictured: Penn's Drew Lutz)
Derrik Smits committed to Butler over the weekend. He is a Zionsville High School graduate that transferred from Valparaiso University. As a grad transfer, Smits is available right away. He will help fill the void Joey Brunk left. Smits averaged 12.2 points and 5.7 rebounds as a redshirt junior last season.
Smits talked to many schools before announcing a final three of Arizona State, Butler, and North Carolina State.
Sean East committed to UMass Sunday. The former New Albany guard is completing a post-graduate season at Combine Academy in North Carolina. He had offers from Mercer, Southeast Missouri State, and Fordham before picking the A10 school.
East was an Indiana All-Star as a senior. He also helped New Albany win the 2016 state title as a sophomore with Romeo Langford and Josh Jefferson.
Drew Lutz was originally headed to Bethel before re-opening his recruitment in March. He had a few D1 schools express interest, but Incarnate Word jumped in with two feet. Lutz committed to Carson Cunningham and Incarnate Word.
Lutz averaged 18.7 points and 7.2 assists as a senior. He should compete for playing time as a freshman for a team that went 6-25 this past season.
Jair Rodgers is transferring from Concord University to Florida Southern College. Rodgers is a graduate of Mishawaka Marian. He also went to Ancilla College for two seasons. Now he heads to the D2 powerhouse after averaging 21 points per game as a junior at Concord.
