Hometown star Anthony Leal has committed to Indiana University. The Bloomington South star recently announced that his final two schools were Indiana and Stanford. He joins Culver Academies wing Trey Galloway in Indiana’s 2020 recruiting class.
Growing up in Bloomington, Indiana University was Leal’s dream school. He has realized that dream, but it was choppy path to get there. Archie Miller’s staff watched Leal frequently but didn’t extend a scholarship offer until April of this year. By then, Leal had scholarship offers from Xavier, Northwestern, Stanford, Iowa, Butler, Maryland, and others.
In June, there were rumblings of Leal and Galloway playing together in college. They have played with Indiana Elite 2020 throughout high school. Schools like Cincinnati explored that possibility. The Bearcats offered both players in June. Indiana was able to make it a reality.
At the end, Indiana turned up its efforts with Leal. The late offer raised concerns for Leal and his family. Once the Hoosiers proved to Leal that they wanted him, Leal was on board.
Hoosier fans will like Leal’s style of play. He’s one of the tougher kids in the class. He proved that by playing through a foot injury in June. In games that most would sit out, Leal competed to win and ignored the pain.
At six-foot-four, he has good size and strength from the guard position. That will help him defend multiple positions in the Big Ten. He’s also a very good spot-up shooter. That is likely going to be his role on the offensive end to begin his career. Leal will help space the floor for Miller’s offense.
Leal projects as a four-year player for Indiana. He’ll give his heart to the IU jersey, and production will follow because of that.
