2021 South Bend St. Joe wing JR Konieczny committed to Notre Dame on Sunday.
The Irish don't have a commitment in the 2020 class, but Mike Brey and his staff were able to keep Konieczny home. He is the first commitment in Indiana's talented 2021 group. Konieczny had offers from Butler, Creighton, and Iowa before picking the Irish.
Before the Notre Dame offer in July, he was planning visits to Butler, Creighton, and Iowa this fall. Purdue, Indiana, and Cincinnati were among the schools keeping close tabs on Konieczny as well. The offer from Notre Dame took his recruitment in a different direction. He took an unofficial visit to the Notre Dame campus then committed to the ACC school a couple weeks later.
Konieczny is a lanky wing that can do a bit of everything. He is more of a scorer than pure shooter at this point. He does a good job of attacking defenders when they close out hard on him. He's also a capable scorer in transition. He had a strong travel season with Indiana Elite 2021 by doing those things on a consistent basis. Konieczny's versatility should continue to progress as he gets stronger.
The 2021 wing had a big sophomore season in Mark Johnson's uptempo system at St. Joe. He scored 23.7 points per game last year. He is poised for a moster junior campaign as his game continues to improve. It wouldn't be surprising if Konieczny increases his scoring by a decent clip this season.
