2020 Lawrence North guard Tony Perkins has committed to Iowa.
Following his official visit, Perkins committed to the Hawkeyes. It is a week after Iowa extended a scholarship to him. The Big Ten started recruiting Perkins after watching him at the NCAA Basketball Academy in July. The shortened July calendar hurt players like Perkins looking to increase their recruitment, but, in the end, he received a high-major offer.
Perkins has always been a favorite of Indiana Basketball Source. That doesn't mean he doesn't have flaws, but Perkins is 6'3" with high-major athleticism and a competitive spirit. At this point, he is best in transition. He has great open court speed and can play the passing lanes well. In the half court, he is a slasher but has shown potential as an outside shooter. On the defensive end, he can guard any position at the high school level. In college, he will be able to defend either guard spot and most wings.
Perkins likely won't have a major impact as a freshman, but he should have a chance to play and fill a role. After developing a bit more, Perkins should be a solid contributor for Iowa.
Expect Perkins to have an Indiana All-Star senior season for Lawrence North. As always, the Wildcats have plenty of talent, but Jack Keefer will need Perkins to be a leader. If he excels in that role, Lawrence North will surprise the public this season.
