After the University of Evansville announced the suspension of head coach Walter McCarty, it was only a matter of time when he was going to be officially fired. That day came on Tuesday evening. UE investigated McCarty for Title IX offenses. (Pictured: Todd Lickliter via gopurpleaces.com)
The university released strongly worded and detailed statements following McCarty's suspension which put the writing on the wall for his termination. The email stated allegations and transgressions going back to his hiring. There were more specifics than a normal suspension email.
With that in mind, it was no shock that the university officially fired McCarty on Tuesday. The surprise came when the school announced Todd Lickliter as its new head coach hours later. Lickliter was on the Evansville staff last season, but stepped away heading into this year for health reasons. Former Indiana University assistant Bennie Seltzer was serving as the interim head coach after McCarty's suspension. It's rare to bring a coach off the street to finish out a season at the college level.
Lickliter was Butler's head coach prior to Brad Stevens. Lickliter left Butler to coach in the Big Ten at Iowa. He went 38-58 in his three seasons there. After that, he was also the head coach at NAIA Marion University in Indianapolis. Lickliter was 49-36 in his three seasons at the school.
After Marian, he spent a season as an assistant coach at Miami of Ohio and last year on Evansville's staff.
Stadium's Jeff Goodman reported that Lickliter signed a multi-year deal with Evansville.
