2021 power forward Caleb Furst has verbally committed to Purdue. The Blackhawk Christian (Fort Wayne) product was recruited hard by Indiana, Michigan State, Virginia, and many others before deciding on the Boilers. (Picture via Twitter.com/CalebFurst)
In a loaded Indiana class, Furst has been at or near the top of it since entering high school. His game has progressed each high school season. It seemed like playing 17 and under on the Nike EYBL helped his game and confidence. He was going against the top 2020 centers – most over 6’10” – with success. He will be back with Indy Heat this spring and summer.
He has always had a good shooting motion, but Furst is looking for spot-ups and pick and pops more and more. Although he has produced mainly in the post, Furst will have the ability to step away from the basket in college. Purdue uses the power forward on the perimeter offensively, so he will be away from the basket when playing alongside another big.
Furst is leading Blackhawk Christian into the 2A playoffs with full steam. The Braves are the favorites thanks to Furst and a strong supporting cast. From a size standpoint, there are only a few 2A players that can match-up with Furst and none that can compete with his athleticism.
For the season, he has averaged 22 points and 13.5 rebounds. Although he has only made three three-pointers, he has shot 80 percent from the free-throw line. That’s a good indicator that his shooting will continue to progress.
Purdue is getting a good player in Furst. They are also in a solid position with South Bend Riley’s Blake Wesley. In a strong 2021 class, it will be interesting who the Boilers will get to play alongside Furst.
