Current Vincennes University star and Terre Haute South graduate Craig Porter committed to Wichita State. Porter will have two seasons to play with the Shockers.
Porter received D1 interest out of Terre Haute South but needed to go the junior college route. He spent two seasons at Vincennes playing at a high level. With Porter at the point, the Trailblazers went 28-5 this year. This season, he was 24th in D1 JUCO for Win Shares. The Win Shares stat tries to encompass all stats compared to the rest of the team. Basically, his production was outstanding.
For Vincennes, Porter did a great job of getting the ball where it needed to be. He found shooters, feed the post, and kept the ball moving. On top of that, he’s a versatile defender that does a great job of anticipating away from the ball. That led to Porter getting over two steals per game.
Offensively, his passing will translate to the next level. He’s been streaky as an outside shooter. When he has time and space, Porter is a solid shooter. There aren’t many of those opportunities in the AAC. As a freshman, Porter made 40 percent of 3.1 three-point attempts per game. It dropped to 30.5 percent on 3.4 attempts this season.
Off the dribble, Porter is solid. He shot 60 percent from two-point range behind his ability to finish in transition and in the lane. He should be able to find opportunities in the open court with his athleticism. Porter has the explosiveness to finish above the rim in traffic.
Porter has a Terre Haute connection at Wichita State. Former Indiana State assistant Lou Gudino is an assistant for Wichita State. Gudino recruited Porter while he was in high school.
So far this offseason, seven scholarship players have transferred from Wichita State. The Shockers landed UCONN transfer Alterique Gilbert, but Porter should have a chance to play a lot of minutes this season.
