2017 Indiana All-Star Michael Ertel is transferring from Louisiana-Monroe. The Mt. Vernon (Fortville) graduate scored 1,386 points in his three years at the Sun Belt school. He’ll be a sought-after transfer. (Picture: Ertel from high school)
Ertel was a lightly recruited player out of high school. He was the 18th ranked prospect in Indiana Basketball Source’s 2017 player rankings. At Louisiana-Monroe, Ertel hit the ground running. He averaged 11.6 points per game. He improved each season until scoring 16.2 points per game as a junior.
Here’s his commitment story prior to his senior year of high school.
As a junior at ULM, Ertel only shot 33.3 percent from deep. For his college career, he shot 38 percent. He had to carry a larger portion of the offense last year, and that knocked his efficiency down a bit. Even at a higher level, Ertel will likely shoot closer to his career average from deep than last year’s results.
Transfers are always a hot commodity, and Ertel should receive plenty of attention from bigger schools. College coaches will like that he doesn’t turn the ball over and can hit shots. At six-foot-two, he has the size play on or off the ball. There are a few different roles that Ertel can bring to his next team – distributor, shooter, ball-handler. It’ll be interesting to see which situation he selects.
