Recruiting keeps rolling along as 2020 players make their college decisions, 2021 prospects receive offers, and Indiana natives transfer colleges. Here is an update on the activity. (Pictured: Kai Steinman)
Southport’s Brevin Jefferson had a host of junior college offers and decided on Vincennes University yesterday. The talented guard has always shown potential, and he turned it into production this season to the tune of 16.2 points, 4.4 assists, and 4.4 rebounds per game. His outside shooting took a step forward as he shot 39 percent from three-point range on 127 attempts. He has the ceiling to earn D1 offers while at Vincennes.
Sticking with junior college commitments, Richmond’s Tytan Newton selected Panola College in Texas. It’s a D1 JUCO with a history recruiting Indiana players. Newton only played one season for Richmond as he moved schools throughout high school. The explosive guard averaged 13.7 points and 4.4 assists as a senior. If his shooting progresses, Newton will be a D1 player after graduating from junior college.
IU-Kokomo has a steal in New Albany’s Julien Hunter. Hunter has been injured throughout his high school career, but he was highly productive and efficient when he played. He’s a bouncy forward that shot ridiculous percentages from the field. Despite the injuries, I thought he still had a chance to help low D1 teams. If he stays healthy, Hunter will be great at IU-Kokomo.
Former Ben Davis guard Kai Steinman committed to Southern Miss as a preferred walk-on. Steinman left Ben Davis midway through the season to finish his career at Aspire Academy in Louisville. While with Ben Davis, he was their leading scorer. He’s a quick guard that can make outside shots.
2021 power forward Blake Sisley was offered by Illinois-Chicago. The Flames had a coaching change this offseason, so Sisley receives an offer from the new staff. Sisley had a great junior campaign as he proved to be the shooter that Indiana Basketball Source projected him to be. That will be a major weapon for him at the college level.
Another 2021 power forward Brady Hunt committed to Ball State for football. Hunt would have had, at least, small college options for basketball. He had an offer from Indiana Wesleyan for hoops. On the gridiron, Hunt is a quarterback.
Crispus Attucks alum Zac Owens will finish his college career at Bethel. He began his career at Huntington before playing at Emporia State last season. He averaged 7.5 points in 16 minutes per game at the D2 school. As a sophomore at Huntington, Owens averaged 15.6 points per game.
LaPorte shooter Garrott Ott-Large is headed to the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne. Ott-Large averaged 17.7 points per game as a senior for the Slicers. His shooting ability will give him a chance for playing time early in his college career.
