On Friday, Butler received its third 2021 commitment from the Indianapolis area as Lawrence North power forward DJ Hughes committed to the Bulldogs. Butler recently offered Hughes and the forward decided to take the scholarship.
Hughes fits the mold of many past Butler power forwards - a bit undersized, strong, athletic, and tough. Hughes plays with an edge that fuels his production. He doesn't back down from any challenge, and that's what has made Butler successful.
Prior to his commitment, Hughes had offers from Duquesne, Toledo, Ball State, IUPUI, New Orleans, and Morehead State. A normal club season likely would have brought more power conference interest and possible offers. Obviously, 2020 has not been normal.
During the high school season, Hughes was a rim finishing and shot blocking presence for Lawrence North. The Wildcats were in position to make a run at the 4A state title after winning Sectional 10. Hughes was the main interior player for Jack Keefer this season.
Here's how Hughes scored when Indiana Basketball Source watched him this season.
Although the chart doesn't show it, Hughes has perimeter skills. He's comfortable attacking off the dribble. He's also improved as a spot-up shooter. Those areas are still progressing, but Hughes should be able to add those attributes to his game.
Hughes joins Jayden Taylor and Pierce Thomas in Butler's 2021 recruiting class. Taylor is a lanky, slashing guard from Perry Meridian. He's a big guard that should be a versatile asset for Butler. Thomas is an elite athlete that made strides with his skill set as a junior at Brownsburg.
