2021 point guard Javon Small has decided to leave Franklin Central for his senior year of high school. Instead of finishing in Indianapolis, Small will attend AZ Compass Prep in Arizona. Small has received a bunch of D1 offers this sumer with high-major schools showing interest.
Even during a pandemic, Small was able to see his recruitment spike with George Hill All Indy. He went from zero offers to his current seven. That's difficult to do when coaches have not been able to watch players in person. Small's ability and potential stood out even while streaming online. All of his offers were warranted.
Small joins a growing list of Indiana natives that have finished their high school careers. Recently, Jaden Ivey, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Paul Scruggs have finished high school at a prep school. It is a trend that hit other state much earlier than it impacted Indiana, but now the Hoosier state is feeling the effects.
It's also possible for things to change. Current Purdue player Brandon Newman planned to go to Montverde Academy in Florida before a family situation had him stay home.
At Franklin Central, Small had a strong sophomore year before breaking out as a junior under Criss Beyers. Prior to Franklin Central, he played his freshman year at South Bend Riley. He was on the junior varsity with Blake Wesley there. As an eighth grader, he saw varsity action at a non-IHSAA school - Community Baptist Christian. He scored 20 points per game for them.
Small has high-major athleticism from the guard spot. His scoring and playmaking attracted the mid-major schools in groves. If his shooting and decision making take another step, Small will likely gain bigger offers.
