Floyd Central guard Jake Heidbreder has decided on the Air Force Academy over his numerous D1 offers. Heidbreder and his family went to the campus over the weekend before making the decision. It was a big wee for the Falcons as they also added Cathedral's Vincent Brady.
Heidbreder had plenty of D1 options - Furman, Elon, Vermont, Lipscomb, Evansville - were a few of the main schools, but he had 10 offers. The Air Force Academy matched Heidbreder in terms of academics (Heidbreder is an elite student), basketball, and life after college. The first time that Indiana Basketball Source spoke with Heidbreder, he mentioned wanting to be a pilot down the road. Obviously, this sets him up for that.
Heidreder had a strong summer with Indiana Elite-Team Indiana. They were a fun team with Heidbreder, Brooks Barnhizer, and Quamari Peterson pushing the tempo and LT Hatton, Curt Hopf, Brian Waddell, and Vinny Buccilla spacing the floor. Heidbreder is great in an uptempo system. Despite a fast pace, Heidbreder never gets sped up by his competition. He also has deep range if defenders play off him.
Heidbreder made Indiana Basketball Source's 4A third all-state team by averaging around 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists per game. Those numbers are more impressive when Floyd Central's methodical pace is factored into it.
Like most recruits going to a service academy, Heidbreder has the option of attending the Air Force's prep school first. Heidbreder is young for his class, and that could be good for his basketball development while getting accustomed to the Air Force life. That is an option that Heidbreder is still weighing.
Last season, Heidbreder helped the Highlanders to their first sectional title since 1989. Heidbreder should have them back in the same position this year. Plus, Floyd Central has been a great program under Todd Sturgeon. In his six years, the Highlanders are 109-34. With Heidbreder, Caleb Washington, Cole Harritt, Brady Moore, Max Tripure, and Wesley Celichowski back, Floyd Central should be a tough team to beat.
