It is hard to have too many surprises in the sophomore-to-be age group, but we have a handful that performed to a higher level than we expected heading into the spring portion of the club season.

Ryan Welage had a solid freshmen year for Greensburg, but I don’t think many people expected him to stand out on a talented Eric Gordon Central Stars team. He has done exactly that. Welage is extremely skilled for a young post player. He can put the ball on the floor as well as hit mid-range jumpers consistently. Welage is also very good in the paint despite being very thin. He has a chance to be a mid-major plus type of prospect, but he will have to put on a lot of muscle on a narrow frame.
Everett Duncan has been a surprise and that is saying something because we knew he was good. We just did not he was THIS good. He is lights out, automatic from the arc. He also plays well off the ball. Duncan will also crash in for rebounds and can finish through contact although he has a slight build right now. His game will need to continue to expand to be mid-major plus, but he is one of the best shooters I’ve ever seen for his age.
Gary Bonds transferred to Warren Central this week. He has been really impressive this spring although he has been battling a nagging back injury. Bonds is a true 6-7 now and has a great touch from the basket out to the 3-point line. He can also handle the ball and has the foot speed to get to the basket while facing up. Hopefully, he will get his back healed and his game will explode to the next level that he has the potential to do. Transferring to Warren Central will also give him a daily test going against talents like Devin Davis and Jordan Garnett.
Ryan Cline would have been a varsity contributor for most programs in the state, but he played behind a boat-load of talented guards for the state champion Carmel squad. He is a big-time shooter-off the catch and off the dribble. Cline’s game should really go to the next level when he grows and his body fills out. He is smart and crafty off the dribble although he is not an explosive athlete. His athleticism should improve with strength. Cline is player for mid-majors to have on their radars. {/iACL}
