Saturday at the 2021 NY2LA Sports Spring Extravaganza provided a platform for many high-level prospects to showcase their immense talent. Indiana Basketball Source details the most notable performances.
JJ Taylor – Mac Irvin Fire 16U – 2023
There is a reason Taylor is a top-10 national prospect. He is a legitimate six-foot-six with top-tier athleticism. He elevates in transition as well as anyone. Taylor also moves his feet like a small guard. The most noticeable thing about Taylor was his effort. He played as hard as anyone in a blowout win. Many top-tier players would have let off the gas, but Taylor competed like it was the most important game of the weekend. In addition to all of that, Taylor shot well from deep. It was not a true evaluation game as the opposing team had no one to match up with Taylor, but his motor and competitiveness solidified his top-10 ranking.
Lawrent Rice – All-Ohio Red 16U – 2023
On Saturday, Rice played like a top-40 prospect. He is a tall, thin point guard that moves his feet at a high level. He caused havoc on the defensive end before turning errors into points. The six-foot-three guard was explosive in transition and off the dribble. Although he scored a lot, Rice set-up his teammates with great passes in traffic. After driving to the basket, he wrapped around a pass to James Okonkwo for a dunk. Rice’s vision and execution were impressive. He should be moving up depth charts.
Devin Royal – All-Ohio Red 16U – 2023
Royal is a big-bodied guard that operated and shot well in the mid-range. He used his six-foot-five length and strength to shoot over defenders. It seemed like he did not miss from the 14-18 foot range. For a big wing, Royal was tough off the dribble, too. He needs to improve defensively, but there is a lot to like about Royal.
Xavier Booker – George Hill All-Indy 16U – 2023
Booker did not have the head-turning performance that he did Friday night, but the 6’10” center made important strides against high-level competition. It seems like he is getting used to battling tough opponents like James Okonkwo. He produced on the boards in traffic and out of his area. Booker displayed a quick, consistent release against hard close outs. The improvements that he displayed this weekend were extremely encouraging for his long-term development.
Azavier Robinson – George Hill All-Indy 15U – 2025
Robinson simply put on a show. The 2025 guard is a thin, lanky youngster with a smooth jumper and explosive off the dribble. In the first half, All-Ohio Red had no answer for slowing Robinson. He broke down defenders off the dribble with his wiggle. Throughout the game, Robinson converted at the rim against help-side defenders. Robinson’s skill and competitiveness stood out against a top-of-the-line team. He is a player to watch in 2025.
Mason Lewis – George Hill All Indy 15U – 2024
Lewis gives off a lot of Tyger Campbell vibes with his hair and mannerisms. For his age, he has great handles and poise with the ball. He was also a consistent finisher in the lane. Lewis is a small guard, but his skill level making plays off the bounce is impressive. He is a 2024 player to watch at North Central High School.
Ace Buckner – All-Ohio Red 15U – 2024
The six-foot guard turned in a big first half to help AOR beat George Hill All Indy. He is a quick guard that likes to create contact while driving to the basket. Once in the lane, Buckner finished at a high level. He also made outside shots, but there is a slight sideways rotation to his shot. His production and athleticism make him a prospect to watch going forward.
