On Sunday, Gary West Side senior point guard Quimari Peterson committed to
Indiana State.
Before committing to
Indiana State, Peterson was one of the top undecided prospects in the state. He led Gary West Side to a great season and deep run in the 4A tournament. His Cougars lost in overtime to the eventual state champs Carmel Greyhounds.
Indiana Basketball Source saw seven West Side games this year, and Peterson averaged 18.6 points, 3 assists, and 2.1 steals per game. Those were against top-tier high school teams. His shooting efficiency was fantastic 23-48 (47.9 percent) from three. That pushed Peterson to an effective field goal percentage of 58.7.
Reports from the Indy Star’s Kyle Neddenriep say that Peterson played well at yesterday’s annual Top 60 Workout. He is contending for a spot on the 2021
Indiana All-Star team, and the workout has decided the final spots in years past.
Peterson received recruiting attention from many D1 programs throughout his career, but New Orleans was consistently in the picture.
IUPUI and
Valparaiso also offered, but they were not in the picture during his senior season.
This spring,
Indiana State had a coaching change as Josh Schertz took over. With the move, a large portion of the Sycamore roster entered the transfer portal. Schertz and the new staff are starting to shape next year’s roster with Peterson and three Lincoln Memorial transfers –
Xavier Bledson, Cameron Henry, and Simon Wilbar. Those transfers will help the transition period. Over the weekend, 2021 guard Cameron Crawford from Alabama committed to
Indiana State, too.
