(Braden Smith sprinted out of the gates against C2K Elite)
Sunday saw several new players emerge on the Indiana Basketball Source radar. Here is a look at the standout prospects from the second day of the Under Armour Association Midwest event.
Braden Smith (2022 Westfield HS) scored 16 points in the first five minutes of Grand Park Premier’s game against C2K Elite. He started four of four from deep, and it did not look like he was going to slow down. The Purdue-bound guard was aggressive off the dribble all game as he beat C2K defenders off the dribble. Smith finished with four assists, but it easily could have been ten with the dimes he was dropping to teammates. He finished with 29 points, but C2K pulled out the victory.
Brent Moss (2022 Lima HS, Ohio) was partly why C2K beat GPP. Moss played a great overall game. He was fantastic around the basket as a finisher and rebounder. Moss also stepped out to the three-point line for a couple of triples. He recorded 21 points and 12 rebounds in the C2K victory.
Jareon Mayo (2022 Lima HS, Ohio) gave C2K a boost off the bench. The big guard knocked down a couple of outside shots and went three of four from the free-throw line to score 13 points. It seemed like all of Mayo’s shots came at crucial times. His shooting helped open the paint for Moss and Abbacar Cisse.
Chandler Jackson (2022 Warren Central) made clutch shots in the second half for D1 Indiana against WCE-NorCal. The Warren Central wing made a three with a minute left to tie the game. Then he was followed in the lane with 20 seconds left and made the game-winning free throws. Jackson made critical three-pointers before those plays as well. He is an excellent spot-up shooter.
Jaxon Edwards (2022 Cathedral) showed his complete game against West Coast Elite – NorCal. He knocked down a couple of threes. That is big for his game and projection. If Edwards is a consistent outside shooter, he will have college coaches drooling in June and July. He’s a superb athlete that makes plays going to the rim. He did that against an athletic WCE-NorCal team. When he adds outside shooting to that, his game goes to a new tier. It was a fantastic showing for the lanky wing.
Quante Berry (2022 Winston-Salem Prep, N.C.) used his length to score around the basket then hit rhythm threes. When he had space, Berry looked great from the outside, but it looked like he preferred to get to the basket and finish. He used a variety of angles to finish against bigger defenders. He was a go-to scorer for B. Maze Elite.
Ja’Kobi Gillespie (2022 Greeneville HS, Tenn.) was unstoppable for B. Maze Elite against Fundamental U. He is quick off the dribble and blew by defenders. Gillespie also scored in transition using his speed. In the halfcourt, he buried multiple deep three-pointers. He had defenders baffled. Gillespie is a fun, productive point guard.
Jackson Munro (2022 New Trier, Illinois) displayed excellent footwork and touch on the block and in the mid-range. Against bigger defenders, Munro kept them off balance by using pivots and shot fakes. After he gained an advantage, Munro converted with his touch. He also knocked down a couple of three-pointers against B. Maze Elite. Munro also rebounded well by being physical and getting boards outside of his area.
Braden Appelhans (2022 Blue Springs, Kan.) turned heads with his shooting ability. The lanky guard splashed outside shots all day. When he had daylight, Appelhans made opponents pay. His consistency was off the charts. Appelhans looked like a high-level three-point shooting specialist at the next level.
Taj Manning (2022 Bishop Miege, Kan.) took advantage of the extra spacing created by Appelhans’ shooting ability. Manning scored 32 points against SOH Elite, and most of those scores came from dunks or layups. He is a strong, explosive forward that elevates around the rim with ease. He mixed in one three-pointer, but Manning proved to be an excellent rim finisher.
Hansel Enmanuel (2022 Life Christian Academy, Fla.) might have been the most impressive player of the event. Enmanuel does not have a left arm, but it barely hinders his game. He is a wiry, long athlete that is superb off the dribble. He has moves that allow him to get to this left. Enmanuel also rebounds and passes well – SOH Elite has him handle the baseline out-of-bounds duties. He is an excellent player.
