IndyBall.com kicked-off the Indiana AAU season this weekend. There was a lot of talent in the tournament for all levels of college basketball from high-major D1's to D3 prospects. Eric Gordon All-Stars defeated Martin's Wolverines for the gold bracket championship. Here are notes and evaluations from 18 players in the 2013 class.

Mike Crawford 6’4” SG Tipton- Crawford dominated against weak competition the game that I saw, but he also played well against Eric Gordon All-Stars. In the game that I saw, he had a couple of dunks in the half court set and a few 3’s. He’s a good athlete and is a good outside shooter. He needs to tighten up his handles though. I don’t think there is any doubt that he will be a solid mid-major wing.
Garrett Hall 6’2” SG Cathedral-Hall would be a 15+ppg scorer for 90% of the high schools in Indiana, but he is buried by the talent at Cathedral. He is a really smooth player with a great outside stroke. Plus, he is a good athlete and can finish around the rim. He will be a great D2/NAIA player.
Jordan King 6’6” PF Ben Davis- Extremely explosive leaper and he has a nice touch in the lane. I didn’t see him do anything on the perimeter, offensively. King could be very good at the D2/NAIA level with his athleticism and touch.
John Murry 6’3” SG North Central-Murry showed what type of player he can be when he is focused and motivated like he was when Tony Wills was guarding him. He has a complete offensive skill set…he is a good outside shooter, he can get to the basket off the dribble, and he can finish above the rim. Murry will occasionally force a bad shot and his high school coach has no patience for that, so it gets him in the doghouse once in awhile. He has the makings to be a really solid mid-major player.
Tony Wills 6’4” SG Ben Davis- Tony had a good tournament scoring the ball. I believe, he went for 35+ in each of their pool play games. That includes the game against John Murry and the Club Elite-Wildcats. He is really smooth with the ball, always goes left though (he is a lefty). Wills is a consistent outside shooter with a quick release. He’s not an explosive athlete but he can create his own shot with step-backs. He’s not going to finish above the rim against defenders though. Wills is a solid mid-major player, but I don’t think he has the explosiveness to get his own shot at the high-major level or defend at that level.
Taishaun Johnson 6’0” PG Pike- Johnson is an extremely quick, shoot first point guard. He is also a good outside shooter, who can get his own shot from distance with his quickness. The downside is that he is more of a shooting guard at 6’0”. He is a good passer when he wants to be, but he is all left-hand and will rarely ever attack going right. D2/NAIA prospect unless he develops into more of a point guard with better shot selection.
Chandler Rowe 6’6” SF North Central- Rowe has some tools to work with as he is long, athletic, and plays hard. He is a role player for North Central and he does the same thing in AAU. I would like to see his skills on full display though. He hit a jab-step 3 in one game and if he can shoot, he would be a high-level D2/NAIA prospect.
Leo Svete 6’4” SG Penn- Leo is a shooter with good size and build. His stroke is very consistent from the outside. He is not a great athlete and will not finish above the rim. Svete is basically Mike Ramey (Southport/Ball State) with better shot selection and without the leaping ability. Mid-major is Svete’s ceiling with his current skills.
Michael Volovic 5’11” PG Carmel- Volovic is starting to pick up recruiting interest after winning the state championship and playing with Eric Gordon All-Stars. Laterally he is quicker than he is on offense. Volovic is extremely tough and is a good leader plus he has great grades. The biggest downfall to his game is that he is 5’11”. If I were a coach, I’d take him at basically every low-major and a lot of mid-majors because of his toughness, ability to knock down shots, and he doesn’t turn the ball over.
Alex Etherington 6’6” SF Hamilton Heights- Etherington might have been the player that I came away most impressed with from IndyBall. He is great when he is attacking the rim in transition or the half-court. Etherington can really get up and is built like a college player already. He did struggle passing against pressure and his jump-shot is still a work in-progress. He really got after it defensively as well. He’s a no brainer for the mid-major level and if his jumper because more consistent, he could be a high-major wing.
Mark Donnal 6’9” PF Wayne, OH- Donnal plays on Dan Dakich’s AAU team. There were a lot of fans in the crowd wondering if he is good enough to play at Michigan. The reason for the doubt is the fact that he isn’t a great leaper. He moves well laterally though and is extremely skilled in the post and outside. Donnal will fit in well at Michigan and will be a match-up problem on the outside for Big Ten bigs.
Jonathan Winters 6’1” SG Bloomington South- I liked Winters in the game that I saw Bloomington South this season. He was a spark off the bench during the high school year with his athleticism and his shooting ability. Winters is extremely explosive off the floor and with his first step. He also has a nice looking shot from the outside. He is probably too small to play the 2-guard at the D1 level, but he could be a major factor at the D2/NAIA level.
Stephen Turner 6’3” SF Mount Vernon- Turner is a glue guy for Dakich’s team. He is always on the floor and giving up his body for the team. His main offensive strength is his outside shooting. He is never going to get to the rim against good athletes but he has good size and strength that could make him good at the NAIA/D3 level.
Franko House 6’6” F Concord- House is one of my favorite players in the 2013 class to watch play. He is a huge guy at 6-6 250, but he also moves well and can get up. His size, strength, and ability to move makes him a D1 football prospect as well. He noted that it is a toss-up between football and basketball at the next level. He can handle the ball well especially for his size. House is great around the basket with his touch and strength, but he can also step out and hit perimeter shots. He has a list of basketball offers from Ball State, Bowling Green, Evansville, Mercer, Toledo, and Western Michigan with Boston College showing interest lately.
Sam Philpott 6’7” SF Noblesville- Philpott is a great catch and shoot wing with his size. He has the ability to get his shot off quickly and with his size if you leave him to help at all he can get the shot off most defenders. He is built pretty well and moves decently. He is a smart player and passes well. Low-major prospect.
Cole Murray 6’7” SF Delphi- Murray shot the ball from deep well all weekend. He plays really well with the Martin’s Wolverines because they have quick guards like Jaylon Brown who can draw help. Murray rarely gets his own shot in the half-court. I believe he is quick enough to put the ball on the floor and attack the basket more, but he isn’t confident enough to do it. He’s a D1 prospect with his size and shooting ability. He has an offer from American and Akron is showing a lot of interest at this time.
Jordan Pickett 6’0” CG University- Pickett is extremely athletic, great lateral quickness and an explosive leaper. He is naturally a shooting guard because his first instinct is to score and to attack the basket to create for him. I’m just not sure how he is going to do as a point guard against big, strong, athletic point guard that he would face at the mid-major level and higher.
Derius Duncan 6’4” SF Noblesville- Duncan is a great athlete that can jump with the best of them. Plus, he is well built. I’m not sold on his skill set though. His shot looks awkward and I’m not sure how consistent it is. D2/NAIA programs should take a look at him though. {/iACL}
